Lecture information: Diabetes has played a key role in multiple twentieth century movements. This talk focuses on the Civil Rights and Post-Civil Rights era to rethink the importance of chronic disease and social activism in America.

Speaker information: Richard McKinley Mizelle, Jr. is Associate Professor of History at the University of Houston. His research, writing, and lecturing focuses on the history of race and healthcare politics, chronic disease, environmental health, and the historical connections between gender, identity, and ethnicity in medicine.

About the Bullitt History of Medicine Club

Formed in 1953, the Bullitt History of Medicine Club is a student organization within the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Medicine. The club promotes the understanding and appreciation of the historical foundations upon which current medical knowledge and practice is constructed, by encouraging social and intellectual exchanges between faculty members, medical students, and members of the community.
