His background is in philosophy and medical anthropology, and his doctoral dissertation concentrated on the impact luck and chance can have on attributions of moral responsibility. Dr. Rennie\u2019s current teaching, research and service interests focus on research ethics, public health ethics and medical ethics, particularly in the context of the developing world. He was co-Principal Investigator of two NIH\/Fogarty International Center bioethics educational projects, in the Central Francophone Africa (\u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bioethics.unc.edu\/2017\/01\/27\/strengthening-bioethics-capacity-and-justice-in-health\/\"><span style=\"font-family: Roboto\">Building Bioethics Capacity and Justice in Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #4f4f4f\">\u2019) and South Africa (\u2018Advancing Research Ethics in Southern Africa\u2019 or <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sun.ac.za\/english\/faculty\/healthsciences\/aresa\/Pages\/default.aspx\"><span style=\"font-family: Roboto\">ARESA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #4f4f4f\">). He was co-Principal Investigator of a NIH-funded research project on the social and ethical implications of HIV cure research (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/searchiv.web.unc.edu\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #007fae\">searcHIV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #4f4f4f\">) and is part of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/unccfar.org\/bioethics-office\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #007fae\">ethics program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #4f4f4f\">\u00a0of UNC\u2019s Center for AIDS Research (CFAR). He is currently co-Principal Investigator of two NIH-funded collaborative projects with Stellenbosch University (South Africa): a PhD program in research ethics (the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/aresa\/\"><span style=\"font-family: Roboto\">ARESA Leadership Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #4f4f4f\">), and a project entitled Research for Ethical Data Science in sub-Saharan Africa (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sun.ac.za\/english\/faculty\/healthsciences\/cmel\/redssa\/staff\"><span style=\"font-family: Roboto\">REDSSA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #4f4f4f\">). With support of the NIH and in collaboration with the Pacific Institute of Research and Evaluation (PIRE), Dr. Rennie has conducting research on the responsible conduct of HIV-related research among adolescents in western Kenya.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #4f4f4f\">Dr. Rennie was Visiting Lecturer at the Center for Bioethics in Stellenbosch, Lecturer in philosophy at UNC-Greensboro, and Lecturer in applied ethics in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Cape Town. In addition to giving guest lectures on research ethics and bioethics at UNC, Dr. Rennie has been teaching in SHS since 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #4f4f4f\">As ethics consultant, Dr. Rennie has acted as lead author of the Ethics Guidance for Research for the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN), Save the Children USA, and has provided ethics consultation for UNC researchers as member of the Social and Behavioral Core of the UNC CFAR. In addition, Dr. Rennie is ethics reviewer for the European and Developing World Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and the Wellcome Trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Roboto;color: #4f4f4f\">Dr. Rennie has successfully applied for NIH grants to conduct qualitative research on rationing AIDS treatment in DR Congo and community attitudes to male circumcision as an HIV prevention strategy in Malawi. He has published in peer-reviewed journals such as PLoS Medicine, Science, the Hastings Center Report, Developing World Bioethics and the Journal of Medical Ethics on a variety of themes, including informed consent, HIV testing policies, medical rationing, implementation ethics, research involving children, health surveillance, health inequality and social justice.
