{"id":1931,"date":"2018-05-07T13:06:33","date_gmt":"2018-05-07T17:06:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/socialmed\/?p=1931"},"modified":"2019-09-19T10:22:19","modified_gmt":"2019-09-19T14:22:19","slug":"buchbinder-article-analyzes-debate-over-aid-in-dying-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/socialmed\/buchbinder-article-analyzes-debate-over-aid-in-dying-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"Buchbinder article analyzes debate over aid-in-dying laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<header>\n<p id=\"description\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0 \u00a0Medical aid-in-dying laws are on the rise in the U.S., but patients still face substantial barriers to access, according to\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 an analysis by Mara Buchbinder, PhD.<\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div id=\"viewlet-above-content-body\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"content-area\">\n<div id=\"parent-fieldname-text\" class=\"plain\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Eight U.S. jurisdictions (seven states plus the District of Columbia) now allow physicians to prescribe a lethal dose of medication to a mentally competent, terminally ill patient, provided that certain conditions are met.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Hawaii passed a medical aid-in-dying law in April, and similar proposed laws are currently under consideration in North Carolina, New York and other states.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">However, in the states were medical aid-in-dying laws are already in effect, patients who wish to use them still face substantial barriers to access, according to a new analytic essay by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/socialmed\/directory\/mara-buchbinder\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mara Buchbinder, PhD<\/a>, an associate professor in the department of social medicine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;People think the main barrier is their state\u2019s legal status and that legalization will resolve access issues. My research suggests otherwise,&#8221; Buchbinder said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Her analysis was recently\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ajph.aphapublications.org\/doi\/abs\/10.2105\/AJPH.2018.304352\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published online<\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0<em>American Journal of Public Health<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Buchbinder&#8217;s article argues that although medical aid-in-dying laws are on the rise in the U.S., legalization does not guarantee access. Patients can and do encounter substantial barriers to access in jurisdictions where medical aid-in-dying is legal, and access is hindered by the same socioeconomic inequalities that are common in U.S. health care.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For example, patients with higher incomes have easier access to physicians who are willing to prescribe the lethal medication.
