Jones is Carolina Covenant Health Program Coordinator

September 10, 2010 – Dr. Samuel W. Jones, MD, NC Jaycee Burn Center, has assumed leadership of the Carolina Covenant Allied Health Program. In his role as program coordinator, Dr. Jones will organize monthly seminars for Carolina Covenant Scholars interested in any of a broad range of health careers.

Pruthi Promotes Free Prostate Cancer Screenings

September 3, 2010 – Dr. Raj Pruthi, Urologic Surgery, is featured on a public service announcement airing on ABC News that promotes UNC Hospitals’ free prostate cancer screening clinic, scheduled for Sept. 22nd and 23rd. The annual screening sessions encourage citizens to take the first step toward diagnosing prostate cancer at a treatable stage. Dr. Pruthi’s public service announcement can be seen on both ABC News and YouTube.

Amos on Dana DiPerna Pillsbury’s Team to Combat Breast Cancer

August 19, 2010

August 19, 2010 — Dana DiPerna Pillsbury, a high school English teacher from Davidson, NC, was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer on Election Day 2004. Five years after her initial treatment, her cancer returned. She was referred to the Breast Center at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, where her team of providers included Dr. Keith Amos (pictured at right).

Phillips and Coward Recieve 2010 Whitehead Awards

August 18, 2010 — Dr. Michael Phillips, a PGY-2 General Surgery resident, and Dr. Matt Coward, a PGY-4 Urology resident, are the Surgery recipients of the 2010 Kaiser Permanente Excellence in Teaching Award. The awards were presented at the annual Whitehead Lecture and Awards Ceremony on August 18.

Neilsen Recognized with the Big Buddy Award

July 20, 2010 — Carrie Nielsen, Social and Clinical Research Specialist in Abdominal Transplant, was presented the Big Buddy Award at the Employee Forum Peer Recognition Award Ceremony on Tuesday, July 20th. The Big Buddy Award recognizes individuals who have taken the time to mentor a fellow employee.

Cairns Appointed Chair of ABA’s Research Committee

June 1, 2010 — Dr. Bruce Cairns, director of the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center, has been appointed by the American Burn Association as chair of its Research Committee. His term will run from 2010 through 2013.

Royal Society of Medicine visits UNC Department of Surgery

May 26, 2010 — Delegates of the Royal Society of Medicine’s Section of Surgery visited the UNC Department of
Surgery from May 21st through May 26th, 2010. Their visit included a joint meeting with the Surgery Department from May 24-25. During the meeting, members of the Royal Society of Medicine and faculty members of the Department of Surgery presented on various surgical education issues.

Detecting Pancreatic Cancer in Early Stages

April 26, 2010 — If pancreatic cancer is detected in its early stages, it can be treated very effectively with surgery, but currently, there are no effective methods of early detection. For this reason, pancreas cancer is very lethal. However, this can change with the new molecular marker, the protein palladin, identified by UNC researchers to detect pancreas cancer in its early developmental stages.
