Medical students are usually on our service for a two-week period during their third year. They are actively encouraged to participate in all functions of the service and are taught both didactically and bedside about the evaluation and care of our patients. Students interested in a more intense experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery often come back to do a sub-internship during their fourth year.<\/p>\n

We have developed a program with the Department of Physiology called the Physio-heart surgery selective (PHSSL). In this program, first-year medical students come into the cardiac surgery suite during or after their Physiology rotations for \u201creal life\u201d demonstration of the basic physiologic concepts that they have just learned. These students have an opportunity to see that what they are learning is used every day in the clinical arena.<\/p>\n

Our faculty members also lecture regularly to medical student classes.<\/p>\n
