He couldn&#8217;t walk from room to room in his house without leaning on his wife to rest every few steps.<\/p>\n<p>His doctor in Fayetteville found that he had aortic valve stenosis, a life-threatening heart problem, and sent him to UNC Hospitals, where Drs. <a class=\"internal-link\" title=\"caranasos\" href=\"\/surgery\/ct\/faculty-staff\/caranasos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thomas Caranasos<\/a> and <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"vavalle\" href=\"http:\/\/findadoc.unchealthcare.org\/details\/1941\/john-vavalle-cardiology-chapel_hill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Vavalle<\/a> gave him a new aortic valve using a new procedure &#8211; Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) &#8211; that replaces the heart valve but eliminates open-heart surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Now he can garden, repair cars, and take walks with his wife.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Sept. 1, 2016 Last fall, Charles Records&#8217; chest felt pinched when he tried to breathe.
