Our Independent Program is a three year Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery residency that follows completion of an ACGME accredited, 5-year General Surgery residency program.
Our Integrated Program is a six year Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery residency that follows completion of medical school.
Saif Al-Bustani, MD, DMD (PGY8)
Dr. Al-Bustani received his degree in dental medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 2005. He then obtained his medical degree from Oregon Health and Science University in 2009, where he also completed a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, in addition to 2 years of General Surgery training.
Jonathan Friedstat, MD (PGY8)
Dr. Friedstat received his medical degree from the University of Illinois-Chicago, and his surgical residency was spent at the University of Washington, Seattle. Prior to joining the Division of Plastic Surgery at UNC, Dr.Friedstat also completed a Burn and Critical Care fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Patrick Mannal, MD (PGY7)
Dr Mannal, MD, attended medical school at the Medical College of Albany in New York State. He completed his surgical residency at the University of Vermont School of Medicine in Winooski, Vermont, graduating in June of 2013.
Amita Shah, MD, PhD (PGY7)
Dr. Shah graduated from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, in San Antonio, Texas and then entered the general surgery program at that institution. Dr. Shah received a PhD in Biomedical Engineering while taking three years off from the general surgery program. She graduated from the surgical residency program UTHSC in June 2013.
Yuen-Jong Liu, MD (PGY6)
Dr. Liu completed general surgery residency in 2014 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School. He graduated with a M.D. degree in 2009 from Yale Medical School, where he also completed the Microvascular Training Course.
Shunsuke Yoshida, MD, MS (PGY6)
Dr. Yoshida received his masters in science and medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at East Carolina University, Brody School of Medicine. During general surgery residency, he completed a Vascular surgery research fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School.
S. Tyler Elkins-Williams, MD (PGY3)
Tyler received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina, where he also completed a residency in General Surgery and a fellowship in Burn Surgery.
Shiara Ortiz-Pujols, MD (PGY3)
Shiara received her medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. She completed multiple years of General Surgery residency at the University of Rochester and UNC.
Rafi Fredman, MD (PGY1)
Rafi received his medical degree from the Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv, Israel.
Kim Jones, MD (PGY1)
Kim received her medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
