Advancing Medical Science<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n

Research is an important component of the Department of Surgery. There are multiple NIH-funded career development grants in the department, with junior faculty working with established senior scientist-mentors throughout the University\u2019s research community. The School of Medicine ranks within the top 15 of the nations\u2019 125 medical schools in research funding from NIH.<\/p>\"Advancing

The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is actively conducting a broad spectrum of clinical research. Whether exploring the limits of modern surgical techniques in our hospitals or working to improve the quality of care in developing areas abroad, UNC strives on every level to contribute to tomorrow\u2019s medical community. Our faculty have several areas of interest, from breast reconstruction to pediatric plastic surgery, lymphedema surgery and facial trauma.<\/p>

<\/p>

Dr. Carr\u2019s<\/a> research interests include outcomes related to breast reconstruction, both autologous and prosthetic.<\/p>

Dr. Damitz<\/a>, who has a special interest in breast aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, is involved in a multicenter project evaluating the long-term safety profile and outcomes in women with silicone breast implants. She is also involved in clinical research focusing on dermal matrices.<\/p>

Dr. Ogunleye<\/a> has several diverse research interests, which include outcomes in cancer reconstruction, disparities in cancer reconstruction, surgical treatment of lymphedema, biodesign innovation and global surgery. <\/p>

Dr. Wood<\/a> has a special interest in outcomes research involving craniofacial and cleft surgeries and surgical outcomes of facial trauma. She has ongoing collaborative projects with craniofacial surgeons at neighboring institutions. Dr. Wood is also involved with Quality Improvement projects related to facial trauma and pediatric plastic surgery.<\/p><\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
