Dr. Toledo performs kidney, liver, and pancreas transplants in addition to living donor nephrectomies and vascular access surgery. Specifically, he has recently been active in developing the ABO-incompatible kidney transplant program. His other clinical interests include quality improvement and outcome measures, and he has been involved in several Six Sigma based projects within the division. Dr. Toledo also directs the Transplant Education Conference Seminar.<\/p>\n
His basic science experience has focused on ischemia and reperfusion injury, and in 2008 he was the recipient of the C. William Hall Award from the Academy of Surgical Research for work in organ preservation. Dr. Toledo\u2019s clinical research has focused on immunosuppressive strategies and pharma-sponsored trials in liver and kidney transplantation. He has over 20 publications in these surgical disciplines and currently serves on the editorial board for the journal\u00a0Dialysis and Transplantation<\/i>.<\/p>\n
His other interests include the intersection of bioethics and transplantation, as well as the history of medicine. Dr. Toledo leads quarterly conferences in transplantation bioethics at UNC and has several publications in the history of medicine and surgery.<\/p>\n
On the national and international level, Dr. Toledo is a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.<\/p>\n
