In 1952, it was recreated as a four year school with the construction of the <strong>North Carolina Memorial Hospital<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"row  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-3 col-md-3 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2728\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/surgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/854\/2018\/09\/chair-womack-150.jpeg\" alt=\"Nathan A. Womack, MD\" width=\"150\" height=\"188\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-9 col-md-9 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<p><strong>The UNC Department of Surgery<\/strong> was created in 1952 along with the new Memorial Hospital. <strong>Nathan A. Womack, MD<\/strong> was recruited from The University of Iowa to become the first Chairman. Dr. Womack set the foundation for a solid surgical program at UNC, that would quickly grow into one of the most respected training ground for surgeons in the United States. He hired the first faculty for the Department, including Dr. Dick Peters, Dr. Warner Wells, Dr. Paul Bunce, and the man who would go on to succeed him, Dr. Colin G. Thomas, Jr. He would later go on to hire such noted surgeons as Dr. George Johnson and Dr. Benson Wilcox.<\/p>\n<p>During his time as Chair, Dr. Womack established a tumor clinic, a hand rehabilitation center, and the division of plastic surgery. He stepped down in 1966 after serving for 14 years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr class=\" rule-thick osc-rule\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-3 col-md-3 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2729\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/surgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/854\/2018\/09\/chair-cgt-150.jpeg\" alt=\"Colin G. Thomas, Jr., MD\" width=\"150\" height=\"189\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-9 col-md-9 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\nDr. Womack\u2019s successor was one of his first recruits to the fledgling Department of Surgery in 1952. In 1966, <strong>Colin G. Thomas, Jr., MD<\/strong> took over the reins of the Chairmanship. Dr. Thomas would inspire students at UNC for the next five decades. Under his leadership, there was a great expansion of specialties, including renal transplantation, bariatric surgery, and pediatric surgery. He also established a dedicated surgical staff for the ER. He stepped down from the Chairmanship in 1984 after 18 years of leadership and guidance.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Thomas lived by the motto with which he closed all his correspondence: <em>\u201ccarpe diem.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr class=\" rule-thick osc-rule\" \/>\n<div class=\"row  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-3 col-md-3 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/surgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/854\/2018\/09\/chair-gfs-150.jpeg\" alt=\"Dr. George F. Sheldon\" width=\"150\" height=\"189\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-9 col-md-9 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<p><strong>Dr. George F. Sheldon<\/strong> became the third Chair of Surgery at UNC in 1984. Dr. Sheldon came from the University of California at San Francisco, where he was in charge of the trauma department. He had an international reputation as a surgeon and educator, having been President of every major surgical association in the United States. While at the helm at UNC, Dr. Sheldon spearheaded a revolution in the expansion of facilities at the School of Medicine and UNC hospitals. He started the Critical Care Service, opened the UNC Hernia Center, and brought in specialties like Surgical Oncology and lung, liver, and pancreas transplantation. Pediatric surgery enjoyed a tenfold growth under his leadership. He was instrumental in the addition of helicopter service to the hospital, and creation of the Ambulatory Care Center.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Sheldon expanded the Department\u2019s services and its reputation, locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. He stepped down from the Chairmanship in 2001, but continued to provide UNC Surgery with the benefit of his decades of knowledge and experience for another twelve years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr class=\" rule-thick osc-rule\" \/>\n<div class=\"row  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-3 col-md-3 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2731\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/surgery\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/854\/2018\/09\/chair-meyer-150.jpeg\" alt=\"Dr. Anthony A. Meyer\" width=\"150\" height=\"189\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-lg-9 col-md-9 col-xs-12 col-sm-12 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\nIn 2001, <strong>Dr. Anthony A. Meyer<\/strong> became the newest Chair of Surgery at UNC-Chapel Hill. He had been recruited to join the staff by Dr. Sheldon, who had worked with Dr. Meyer in trauma at University of California-San Francisco. As Chair, Dr. Meyer expanded the General Surgery residency to six chiefs, put a limit on duty hours, and helped expand the UNC Health Care System. He has spurred the implementation of minimally-invasive surgical skills throughout the Department, and led innovation in robotic surgery, arrhythmia surgery, vascular surgery, and single port general surgery. Under his watch, the Department of Surgery has opened the Burn Reconstruction and Aesthetic Center, and evolved in-house Acute Care coverage to 7\/24\/365.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr class=\" rule-thick osc-rule\" \/>\n<p>In the 60-plus years of Surgery at UNC, there has been a rapid growth of the department and the institution in period of dramatic change in health care. Presently, UNC provides excellent, innovative patient care and training of next generation of surgeons. Everyone has helped develop an environment of collegiality and professionalism that defines the culture of UNC Surgery.
