ABOUT YUMAN FONG, MD, DSc (Hon)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Yuman Fong is a graduate of Brown University (BA, Medieval Literature, 1981) and Cornell University Medical College (MD, 1984). After surgical training at the New York Hospital\/Cornell Medical Center and surgical oncology fellowship at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, he was appointed to the faculty of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. There he served on staff for over 20 years and held the Murray F. Brennan Chair in Surgery. He is currently the Sangiacomo Chair and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the City of Hope Medical Center.<\/p>\n

Dr. Fong is best known clinically for his extensive work in the field of liver and pancreatic surgery. His work helped establish resection of colorectal metastases as a safe, effective, and potentially curative option even at stage IV. He has assisted in the design and deployment of many novel surgical tools. His work in medical engineering has led to his election to the American Institute of Medical and Biologic Engineering.<\/p>\n

Dr. Fong has also been active in biologic bench investigation. He was part of the group that discovered tumor necrosis factor and helped established the field of innate immunity. His laboratory focus over the last 15 years has been in the field of gene therapy, designing and studying the use of genetically modified viruses for the killing of cancer. His group was the first to administer recombinant viruses into the bloodstream of man as a cancer treatment. His leadership in this field on the national level has included serving as the Chair of the Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee (RAC) of the National Institutes of Health. He is currently Editor in Chief of Molecular Therapy Oncolytics (Cell Press).<\/p>\n

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Abstracts are now being accepted for the\u00a02019 Nathan A. Womack Surgical Society Research Day\u00a0<\/strong>scheduled to take place on Friday, June 7 at the Koury Oral Health Sciences Building.<\/p>\n

Previously presented abstracts\/posters are acceptable. Case reports are not acceptable. Mandatory attendance and participation with\u00a0abstract\u00a0submission\u00a0is\u00a0asked of all residents. Submissions from fellows and medical students are also encouraged and welcomed.<\/p>\n

Abstracts must be less than 3000 characters including spaces.\u00a0Top-ranked\u00a0abstract submissions will be selected for oral presentations. Applicants selected for oral presentations will be informed by late May. Prizes will be awarded for the top oral and poster (basic science and clinical) presentations.<\/p>\n

All abstracts must be submitted electronically. The extended deadline for submission is Sunday, May 12th by 11:59 pm. Late submissions will not be accepted.<\/strong><\/p>\n
