Sheldon, MD, Leadership Award Recipient.<\/h4>\n<p>Since 2000, the Department of Surgery has recognized a fourth-year medical student who demonstrates outstanding academic and clinical achievement, and who possesses personal characteristics that promise a future leadership role in surgery. Originally named the Hugh Williamson Award, it was renamed in 2006 to honor George F. Sheldon, MD, UNC Department of Surgery Chair from 1984 to 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Jihane Jadi is a valued and longstanding member of our academic and clinical community. She received her undergraduate degree in 2017 from UNC and has remained here for medical school. An underlying theme to Jihane\u2019s undergraduate education and medical training has been her passion for public service \u2013 leading, guiding, and mentoring others. She held several leadership positions including Individualization Phase President, Application Phase Curriculum Affairs Representative, President of the UNC Chapter of the Association of Women Surgeons, and Vice President of the UNC Chapter of the Global Surgery Student Alliance. Jihane has been involved in several research projects within our department, leading to co-authorship on two publications and 11 oral and poster presentations at local, regional, and national conferences. Clinically, she received high praise from preceptors for her professionalism, maturity, and initiative. There is no doubt that Jihane provides exceptional patient care and places a high value on service, as illustrated by her Honors grades in Surgery and Medicine and high marks in all areas of communication, professionalism, and practice- and system-based learning. Jihane is an active member of our John B.
