Three Department of Surgery Faculty members were honored for their excellence and impact by the UNC Academy of Educators during the Alan W. Cross Evening of Scholarship on June 6th, 2023. Congratulations to Dr. Jeyhan Wood, Dr. Muneera Kapadia, and Dr. Arielle Perez.<\/p>\n

\"\"Application\/Individualization Phase Clinical Preceptor Excellence in Teaching Award:\u00a0Jeyhan Wood, MD<\/h4>\n

Application\/Individualization Phase\u00a0<\/strong>Clinical Preceptor Excellence in Teaching Award<\/b>\u00a0(for faculty at UNC Hospitals) \u2013 Two awards for faculty within the Application\/Individualization Phase. Awards in this category would go to faculty who are strong clinical preceptors, but who do not have administrative responsibilities that place them on the Clinical Curriculum Committee. Only individuals who have not received this award within the past 5 years are eligible.<\/p>\n

Educational Mentor\/Advisor Award: Muneera Kapadia, MD, MME<\/h4>\n

Educational Mentor\/Advisor Award<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Two awards that recognize dedication and effectiveness of UME or GME faculty who are not officially part of the medical student or GME program leadership (i.e.-not course directors of medical student courses, program directors or assistant\/associate program directors) in mentoring students or residents or fellows in career endeavors. Letters of support could also come from other present and former medical student or GME advisees of the faculty member. Only individuals who have not received this award within the past 5 years are eligible.<\/p>\n

\"Dr.Innovation in Teaching Award: Arielle Perez, MD, MPH<\/h4>\n

This award recognizes innovation in medical student, GME\/resident\/fellow teaching and could include course directors, program directors, or teachers with administrative responsibilities. The nomination letter should include a description of the innovative teaching methods developed and medical student, GME\/resident\/fellow evaluations, if available, of the impact of those innovative teaching methods.\u00a0Only individuals\u00a0who\u00a0have not received this award within the past 5 years are eligible.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Academy of Educators (AOE), at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, was founded in October 2006 as a part of the School\u2019s strategic plan to enhance research and scholarship towards excellence in teaching.\u00a0 Currently, the Academy has four committees, Scholarship, Programming, Awards, and Membership.\u00a0 The AOE is overseen by a President, with support from a Leadership Council, and a Coordinator from the Office of Faculty Affairs & Leadership Development.<\/p>\n

The Mission of the Academy is<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. to promote and support excellence in teaching and the work and career paths of excellent teachers;<\/li>\n
  2. to promote and fund curricular innovation, evidence-based curricular change and a scholarly approach to the education mission; and<\/li>\n
  3. to provide a forum for education leadership and advice for the Dean, Vice Dean of Education,\u00a0 and Vice Dean of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development (FALD).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
