Congratulations <\/span>Advanced Practice Providers of the Year,\u00a0<\/span>Lauren Hill, DNP, NP and Jamie Hollowell MSN, ACNP<\/h3>\n

Advanced Practice Providers are a huge part of our UNC Surgery team. Read on for ways their nominating colleagues described each.<\/p>\n

<\/h4>\n

Lauren Hill, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery Nurse Practitioner:<\/h4>\n

She is the pillar of the thoracic surgery service. She fulfills the tripartite mission of academic surgery \u2013 research, education, and clinical care. Thanks to her tireless efforts in all three of these categories, the thoracic surgery service excels. Let me provide some examples.<\/p>\n

Firstly, in research \u2013 She is the go-to person for people who want to collect data for thoracic surgery studies. In fact, it is thanks to her doctoral project that we have dramatically changed our chest tube protocol. She collected data on air leaks and chest tube output for all lung resection patients. Now, we don\u2019t get daily chest x-rays, we pull tubes if the output is less than 500cc and we don\u2019t get post chest tube removal x-rays. Her study convinced the attendings to change their practice. As a result, patients are undergoing fewer x-rays and getting discharged soon. Again, this is all thanks to her study.<\/p>\n

<\/h4>\n

Jamie Hollowell, Division of Burn Surgery Nurse Practitioner:<\/h4>\n

The work she has done to improve hospital-acquired infections in the Burn ICU has been extraordinary.\u00a0 For example, she championed a burn central line placement and change over wire checklist that led to a 40%<\/b> reduction in central line infections.\u00a0\u00a0 Under her leadership of the Burn ICU APPs, catheter associated urinary tract infections have decreased by 54%<\/b> and ventilator associated pneumonia has decreased 57%.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/b>She works tirelessly to ensure that each acutely injured patient is provided with the utmost clinical care.<\/p>\n
