Keith Amos, MD, a member of the Surgical Oncology division in the Department of Surgery, was honored with the 2009 Robert E. Bryan Public Service Award for his work on “Breaking Free.” This award is sponsored by the Carolina Center for Public Service, which engages and supports the faculty, students and staff of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in meeting the needs of North Carolina. The Center strengthens the University’s public service commitment by promoting scholarship and service that are responsive to the concerns of the state and contribute to the common good. The Center relies on private gifts to sustain and grow its programs. Dr. Amos received the award on Friday, April 17, 2009, during the 2009 Public Service Awards Ceremony and Reception at The Carolina Club.<\/p>\n

The Robert E. Bryan Public Service Award honors the memory and accomplishments of alumnus Robert E. Bryan (\u201926) of Newton Grove, NC, who worked his way through Carolina to become a successful businessman, entrepreneur and public servant. The Bryan Award recognizes individuals (students, faculty or staff) who, as representatives of UNC-Chapel Hill, have demonstrated outstanding engagement and service to the state of North Carolina by:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Working in partnership with community members,<\/li>\n
  2. Inspiring and involving others, and\/or helping others to serve,<\/li>\n
  3. Responding to a practical problem, issue or concern of the state, and<\/li>\n
  4. Working to assure that the impact of their efforts in the community is lasting.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    This award is for a particular effort or one-time event (rather than an overall record of service) carried out through the individual\u2019s role(s) in the University rather than as a private citizen. Students, faculty and staff are eligible. Up to three awards are given annually.
