Gerber, MD, FACS\" class=\"image-inline\" alt=\"David A. Gerber, MD, FACS\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In this role, Dr. Gerber will oversee the multidisciplinary clinical operations for adult and pediatric programs in kidney, liver, heart, lung, and pancreas transplant. Gerber succeeds Dr. Ron Falk, who held the position since 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Gerber, an accomplished surgeon and researcher, is actively engaged in basic science research focusing on stem cell biology and tissue engineering in the field of Regenerative Medicine and holds two patents in this area. He was promoted to Professor in 2007. Since that time, he has continuously been selected to \u201cBest Doctors in America.\u201d He was elected to UNC\u2019s Faculty Council and the University\u2019s Faculty Executive Committee that oversees faculty governance for the University of North Carolina. Beginning in 2008, he has served as the UNC Transplant Center\u2019s United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) Representative and has been actively involved in UNOS processes including the electronic donor organ allocation system. He is former chair of the Scientific Studies Committee for the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and in 2008 was selected as a James IVth Traveling Fellow. In 2010 he was appointed by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to the Advisory Committee on Transplantation. He holds the rank of Colonel in the US Air Force Reserve Medical Corps and is an Adjunct Professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). In 2013 he received the Clinical &#038; Academic Grand Master Special Experience Identifier Award from the Office of the Surgeon General in the USAF and in 2015 completed Air War College.  <\/p>\n<p>Gerber joined the UNC School of Medicine in 1998, after completing a clinical transplant fellowship at the Starzl Transplantation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Transplant Immunology and his general surgery training at Emory University.
