In 2015, medical schools across the country sent 10,992 new physicians out into the workforce. Of that number, only 1,061 \u2013 less than 10 percent \u2013 were black. And, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only about 5 percent of physicians currently practicing across the country are black.<\/p>\n

Dale Okorodudu, MD, president and founder of DiverseMedicine Inc., and a senior Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellow at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and the team at Diverse Medicine hope to encourage greater diversity in the field of medicine.<\/p>\n

As part of DiverseMedicine\u2019s efforts, Okorodudu visited UNC Health Care to feature Sean McLean, MD<\/a>, in his \u201cBlack Men in White Coats\u201d video series – a UNC School of Medicine alumni faculty member working tirelessly to recruit and inspire the next generation of UNC-trained physicians.<\/p>\n

The \u201cBlack Men in White Coats\u201d video series provides a rounded and engaging perspective of black men in medicine. The aim of the series is to inspire more African Americans to consider the field of medicine by showing them the stories of others who\u2019ve done so successfully.
