SUMMARY:TARC Research Seminar: Dr. Janet Rubin; "The Skeleton in a Physical World"
DESCRIPTION:“The Skeleton in a Physical World” \nBrief Description: All organisms exist within a physical space and respond to physical forces as part of daily life. The skeleton responds in real-time to physical stresses placed on it to ensure that its structure supports its function. I will discuss how those cells responsible for remodeling skeletal structure respond to mechanical force (load magnitude\, frequency\, and cyclicity)\, and how force rearranges cellular structure in turn. Next I will discuss how maturation into cells that remodel bone is affected by mechanical force and the cell’s cytoskeleton. I will also consider how this information applies to a prescriptive for intelligent exercise. \nDr. Janet Rubin\nSarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Professor of\nMedicine\, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism\nVice Chair for Research\, Department of Medicine\nUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill \nAttend Live in TARC Dickson Conference Room\, or via Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/99184257365?pwd=Sk12ZDVON3NpSlZydjl5RTdHRlVidz09 \nMeeting ID: 921 0198 5767\nPasscode: 005755\nPhone (New York): 929-205-6099\nPhone (Toll-free): 888-475-4499 \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:“The role of obesity in inflammatory arthritis: epidemiologic challenges.”\nBrief Description of Presentation: The risks of obesity in the development and severity of inflammatory arthritis have been difficult to estimate\, partly because body mass is a poor indicator of metabolic health. In this talk we will explore the associations between obesity (as traditionally defined) and clinical outcomes in patients with inflammatory arthritis\, and discuss some work to better define metabolic health to improve prognosis.\nJoshua F. SUMMARY:UNC CCCR Speakers Series: Dr. Virginia Kraus; "Treatment stratification of patients based on biomarker profile"
DESCRIPTION:“Treatment Stratification of Patients Based on Biomarker Profile” \nBrief Description: Stratified medicine involves the use of biomarkers to differentiate patient populations into subsets (i.e. endotypes) that provide more detailed information about the specific causes of conditions\, and predict how patients will respond to a given drug or combination of drugs. The ability to successfully identify different osteoarthritis (OA) endotypes will increase chances of regulatory approval of drugs for OA and ultimately\, transform the current empirical medical practice to efficient data-driven individualized therapeutic strategies with lower risk of medical error. This talk will summarize currently proposed OA endotypes and current prospects and implications. \nVirginia Kraus\, MD\, PhD\nProfessor of Medicine\, Duke University School of Medicine\nMary Bernheim Distinguished Professor of Medicine\nProfessor of Pathology \nRegister to attend via Zoom: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIocOmupzIuGNQI5NN5-ofZ8xdPniPOk_8h \n

SUMMARY:TARC Research Seminar: Dr. Laurie Goodrich; "Orthopedic Translational Medicine: Horses\, Humans and the Pursuit of Joint Health"
DESCRIPTION:Presentation Title: “Orthopedic Translational Medicine: Horses\, Humans and the Pursuit of Joint Health” \nBrief description: Post-traumatic Osteoarthritis (PTOA) is extremely common in equine athletes as well as humans. The horse is an incredible translational model and has been utilized for decades to inform equine clinicians treating their patients and MD’s treating people with PTOA. Further\, septic arthritis has been a musculoskeletal condition that causes intense pain\, suffering and sometimes death in both horses and people. This talk will review preclinical modeling to treat PTOA and septic OA in horses as a method to better treat disease in equine patients and humans. Expansive knowledge has been gained in the last decade to further help these common diseases in athletes and this talk will inform attendees of the exciting new modalities that are on the horizon in One Health. \nPresenter:\nLaurie R. SUMMARY:Joint Presentation: UNC CCCR Speakers Series + Program For Precision Medicine in Health Care: “Machine Learning Tools for Clinical Researchers” – A Pragmatic Series
DESCRIPTION:Join the UNC Core Center for Clinical Research (CCCR) and Program for “Precision Medicine in Health Care (PPMH) for Machine Learning Tools for Clinical Researchers: A Pragmatic Approach Series\,” a free virtual seminar series on May 11\, 18\, and 25\, 2022. \nThis series will provide a foundation of knowledge regarding the use of machine learning tools in clinical questions\, define the strengths and limitations of these methods\, explore real-world examples of applied machine learning methodology in clinical research\, and elucidate how machine learning can be used to advance precision medicine research. \nIf you are a clinical researcher who could benefit from incorporating machine learning tools in your research\, be sure to attend the May 25th session. Present a “pitch” (5-10 minute overview) of your research project\, receive guidance from machine learning experts\, and compete for funding from PPMH for analytical support from the NC TraCS Institute. Email precisionmedicine@med.unc.edu for pitch guidelines. \n\nIntegrating Machine Learning into Your Clinical Research; May 25\, 1:00-3:00pm\n\nClick here to register and for more information. \nContact precisionmedicine@med.unc.edu with any questions.

SUMMARY:TARC Research Seminar: Dr. Doug Phanstiel; "Genomic Approaches to Understanding the Genetic Risk of Osteoarthritis"
DESCRIPTION:“Genomic Approaches to Understanding the Genetic Risk of Osteoarthritis” \nGenome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified over 100 osteoarthritis (OA)-associated loci; however\, translating these broad loci into actionable therapeutic targets requires identifying the causal variants\, the gene(s) they affect\, and their mechanistic impact on OA risk. We apply genomic\, bioinformatics\, and genome editing approaches to identify novel OA risk genes for further study and therapeutic development. \nDr. Doug Phanstiel \nAssistant Professor of Cell Biology & Physiology \nUNC Chapel Hill \nAttend Live in TARC Dickson Conference Room\, or via Zoom \n\n\n\nVirtual (Zoom) URL: https://zoom.us/j/92101985767?pwd=d3hHbWhHMFlQSm05RmdCVVVmMkVIUT09 \nMeeting ID: 921 0198 5767 \nPasscode: 005755 \nPhone (New York): 929-205-6099 \nPhone (Toll-free): 888-475-4499
