{"id":11545,"date":"2021-06-11T12:31:07","date_gmt":"2021-06-11T16:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/tarc\/?page_id=11545"},"modified":"2024-12-02T14:42:33","modified_gmt":"2024-12-02T19:42:33","slug":"dr-callahans-research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/tarc\/more-information-about-our-research\/dr-callahans-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Callahan&#8217;s Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Leigh Callahan is Associate Director of the UNC Thurston Arthritis Research Center, and Director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/oaaction.unc.edu\/\">Osteoarthritis Action Alliance<\/a>.\u00a0 She is a leading epidemiologist and an internationally recognized researcher in the area of osteoarthritis and other rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases.<\/p>\n<p>She also directs the NIAMS-funded, Thurston Arthritis Research Center\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/tarc\/research\/cccr\/\">Core Center for Clinical Research<\/a> (CCCR), which helps researchers to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Design, implement and analyze innovative studies of rheumatic diseases<\/li>\n<li>Improve understanding of disease mechanisms<\/li>\n<li>Inform the best strategies for disease prevention and treatment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dr. Callahan\u2019s experience covers a very broad spectrum of research and leadership among leading medical professional associations and alliances, as well as evidence-based community interventions, and teaching tomorrow\u2019s leading healthcare professionals. \u00a0She is currently the President-Elect of the U.S. Bone and Joint Initiative, and she recently joined the NIAMS Council as a member.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A few examples of Dr. Callahan\u2019s areas of research include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mortality and osteoarthritis:<\/strong> studies evaluating the role of knee and hip osteoarthritis (alone and in combination with co-morbid conditions) and mortality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Community-based physical activity and weight loss intervention trials:<\/strong> evaluating and establishing the evidence-base for physical activity interventions that can be implemented in the community setting, e.g.,\u00a0Weight Loss and Exercise for Communities with Arthritis in North Carolina (WE-CAN),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arthritis.org\/living-with-arthritis\/tools-resources\/walk-with-ease\/\">Walk With Ease<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27553228\">Camine con Gusto<\/a>\u00a0(the Spanish language version of Walk With Ease), Tai Chi for Arthritis, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncoa.org\/article\/evidence-based-program-active-living-every-day\/\">Active Living Everyday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Social determinants and health outcomes:<\/strong> observational research examining associations of factors such as age, gender, education, ethnicity and place of residence with a range of health outcomes including disability, pain and psychosocial factors in patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Health Literacy:<\/strong> development of \u201cHealth Literacy Universal Precautions Toolkits\u201d for primary care, rheumatology, and cardiology designed to help clinical practice settings in working with individuals with all levels of health literacy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Team Members:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/tarc\/directory\/kirsten-ambrose-ms-ccrc\/\"><strong>Kirsten Ambrose, MS, CCRC<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nAssociate Director, Osteoarthritis Action Alliance<br \/>\n<a href=\"mailto:Kirsten_Ambrose@med.unc.edu\">Kirsten_Ambrose@med.unc.edu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Leigh Callahan is Associate Director of the UNC Thurston Arthritis Research Center, and Director of the Osteoarthritis Action Alliance.\u00a0 She is a leading epidemiologist and an internationally recognized researcher in the area of osteoarthritis and other rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases.
