presentation he provided a comprehensive perspective regarding, \u201cOsteoarthritis: Past, Present and Future.\u201d \u00a0Each year the Rheumatology Research Foundation (RRF) selects one researcher to receive the award and present at its memorial lectureship during the annual American College of Rheumatology (ACR)\/Association of Rheumatology Professionals (ARP) meeting \u2013 held this year in Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p>The award is provided to a recipient based on criteria that includes their being recognized as \u201can outstanding investigator in rheumatology,\u201d as well as additional criteria such as \u201cresearch and scholarship,\u201d and \u201cacademic and professional leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Loeser\u2019s lecture discussed the evolution of osteoarthritis from an inevitable result of aging and injury often characterized as, &#8220;wear and tear,&#8221; to a complex biological condition that affects the entire joint structure, resulting in pain and disability.\u00a0 In the lecture he stated, \u201cWe have developed a much more complete understanding of the biology of osteoarthritis, including the recognition that there is an important role for inflammation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that, \u201cThere are clearly a number of different inflammatory factors that are promoting degradation of joint tissues in OA.\u00a0 And we are developing new
