Kwan and Boerneke Help Support National \u2018Penicillin Allergy Awareness Day\u2019 Efforts With Programs that Train Physicians and Benefit Patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_10001\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 160px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/tarc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/802\/2020\/09\/Millie-Kwan-Renae-Boerke-nrp-comb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10001 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/tarc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/802\/2020\/09\/Millie-Kwan-Renae-Boerke-nrp-comb-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Kwan and Dr. Boerneke are helping to support penicillin allergy awareness day.\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Dr. Kwan and Dr. Boerneke<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The team has launched an innovative outpatient program where providers delable penicillin allergy through penicillin allergy assessments.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, their project has recently been selected for participation in the <span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;color: #4f4f4f\">existing UNC Institute for Healthcare Quality Improvement (IHQI) Scholars program, in order to help train various clinicians about the importance of obtaining an accurate allergy history through conducting penicillin allergy assessments, and the utility of allergy and immunology referrals for penicillin skin testing in this patient population. IHQI will provide the initiative with additional program management resources.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>About Penicillin Allergies&#8230;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ten percent of the U.S. population are classified in their medical records as being allergic to penicillin.\u00a0 However only about 1% actually are allergic. The majority of patients identified as having penicillin allergy are not actually allergic, or were correctly diagnosed in the past, but are no longer allergic.<\/p>\n<p>This leads to many patients who would be appropriate for penicillin, receiving other antibiotics, which may cause more side effects, are more expensive, may not be as effective as penicillin for treating some types of infections, and may increase the chance of patients developing antibiotic resistance.<\/p>\n<p>For these reasons, Drs.
