An important aspect of Project TICKER is partnering with families to design materials and incorporate feedback from real experiences throughout the project. Family advisors have been asked to participate based on their experiences as parents whose children have been cardiac surgery patients at N.C. Children’s Hospital.

Project Activities

  • Design of family portion of Daily Goals Sheet to be used post-surgery: At the end of PICU morning rounds, the attending physician or fellow recaps the main goals to communicate with the family, and the nurse transcribes these goals to a white board in the patient’s room.
  • Photos of attending physicians and fellows posted in every patient room and updated weekly.
  • Development of Family Perspectives and Communication training for PICU staff led by family advisors.
  • Guidelines for what to expect in the PICU: Advice for parents in their own words is available on the PICU website as well as resources for family networking and support.
