At the Center for Environmental Medicine, Asthma & Lung Biology, our mission is to investigate the effect of indoor and outdoor air pollution on lung and cardiovascular health, with an emphasis on the effect of such pollution on people who are at increased risk for problems due to pollution, including those with allergic diseases, asthma, chronic bronchitis, COPD and multi-system states such as obesity and diabetes. In fulfilling this mission, we employ a multidisciplinary approach to study respiratory immune responses, study therapies for asthma and allergy and other lung diseases, and examine the systemic effect of lung illness in people. Our approach is to marry fundamental cellular, molecular and immunological biology with epidemiology and preclinical studies of volunteers to understand what threshold levels of pollution impact people, how people can protect themselves from air contaminants, and to use our techniques to identify new therapies for people with lung disease, translating fundamental research into knowledge that directly improves respiratory health for people. Our work represents a partnership with the Human Studies Division of the US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Laboratory of Respiratory Biology of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). We have also been named as a Center of Excellence for Research on Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CERC) by the NIH’s National Center for Alternative and Complementary Medicine (NCCAM) to examine the role of antioxidant vitamins in maintaining lung health in the face of indoor and outdoor pollution. We are also funded for translational research by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute as well as the NIEHS. Our approaches are also used by developers of new therapies to determine the most effective therapies to use in people with allergic and respiratory diseases. We welcome your interest in our program. If you would like to learn more about us or participate in one of our studies, please email one of our study staff or call us at 919-962-0126.
