Emma Bowers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

Emma Bowers was recently awarded the 2016 EPA Science to Achieve Results (STAR) Fellowship in Human Health Risk Assessment and Risk Management. Under the mentorship of Dr. David-Diaz Sanchez, Emma is investigating why some individuals are much more sensitive to air pollutant exposure than others, an important global public health issue. Using the model air pollutant, ozone, she is combining work from in vitro <\/i>models and human clinical studies to identify novel susceptibility factors. A central theme of her work is exploring the capacity of the epigenome to influence exposure outcomes. She recently co-authored a paper showing that baseline chromatin modifications at pro-inflammatory genes are predictive of transcriptional response to ozone exposure. Emma hopes to continue environmental epigenetics research in a post-doctoral position and eventually become a principle investigator.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
