Drawing out of vial:

  • Use needle that comes attached to the syringe for drawing out the dose.
  • Remove metal covering from the top of the vial, and open a clean alcohol swab. Wipe the rubber top of the progesterone vial with the alcohol swab.
  • Withdraw 1.5ml (1 ½ mark on the syringe) of progesterone. Inject fluid back into the vial, up to the 1ml mark (this is the injection volume). You can repeat this process until there are no air bubbles in the syringe.
  • Flip the vial right-side up, and remove the needle (this prevents medication from splashing back out).

Injecting:

*You may use an ice pack over the injection site (for approximately 30 seconds). This will help numb the area and minimize pain associated with injection.

  • Open a new alcohol pad, and swab the injection area (see image).
  • Prog inj
*Allow area to dry before injecting

  • Change needle, and insert needle at a 90 degree angle. If you are very thin, insert needle so that ¼ to ½ inch is left outside of body.
  • Aspirate (pull back on plunger) to ensure that no blood is pulled back into the syringe. If blood is pulled back into syringe (this is uncommon), pull needle out, change to a different needle, and try again in a different location.
  • Count to 10 while injecting progesterone (slow injection of progesterone allows muscle to absorb it as you inject, causing it to be less painful).
  • After injecting, leave needle in for 1-2 seconds, and withdraw needle quickly.
  • You may gently massage the injection site for a minute or two to help the progesterone disperse (this will help prevent it from becoming sore).
