Michael Woods received his medical degree from the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. He completed the majority of his urologic residency training at Tulane University, however, due to Hurricane Katrina, he completed his final year of residency at Loyola University. Dr. Woods returned to Tulane to complete a fellowship in Laparoscopy, Robotics and Endourology. After his fellowship training, Dr. Woods returned to Loyola as an Instructor in Urology before becoming an Assistant Professor of Urology in 2009. While at Loyola, Dr. Woods established the robotic surgery program and focused his practice on the minimally invasive treatment of urologic cancers. In 2011, Dr. Woods joined UNC as an Associate Professor of Urology. He also serves as the Director of Robotics and Minimally-Invasive Surgery and the Endourology Fellowship Director. He a member of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Dr. Woods specializes in the management of all urologic cancers (including prostate, bladder, kidney, testicular, penile, and adrenal) using open, laparoscopic, and robotic techniques. Dr. Woods routinely performs post-chemotherapy RPLNDs for testicular cancer and offers robotic RPLNDs for appropriate candidates. He performs all types of urinary diversion (including orthotopic neobladder) for patients undergoing radical cystectomy.
Dr. Woods’ research efforts are focused on clinical trials to improve the care of urologic cancer patients. His current trials involve the evaluation of surgical techniques for bladder removal, novel therapies for bladder cancer, urine based testing for prostate cancer, and the impact of diet on men with low risk prostate cancer.
