The UNC Department of Urology is proud to recognize Dr. Marc Bjurlin, Associate Professor of Urology and member the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, for his exceptional contributions as an invited speaker at the 11th Symposium of the Oncological Urology Section of the Polish Urological Society. The prestigious event, held in Warsaw, Poland, brought together leading global experts in urology, oncology, radiology, radiotherapy, and nuclear medicine to discuss groundbreaking advancements in urologic care.

Dr. Bjurlin’s participation underscores his commitment to international collaboration and innovation. His ability to bridge research, clinical innovation, and education enhances UNC Urology’s reputation as a hub for excellence in urologic care. During the symposium, Dr. Bjurlin delivered four impactful presentations, including:

  • “Optimal Protocol for Active Surveillance (AS) in Patients with Intermediate-Risk Prostate Cancer”
  • “The Role of Lymphadenectomy in the Surgical Treatment of Prostate Cancer”
  • Panel Discussion: “How Should an Ideal Radical Robotic Prostatectomy Proceed?”
  • “The Role of Imaging Studies and Molecular Markers in the Evaluation of Renal Tumors”

Advancing Urologic Care Through Research and Innovation

Dr. Bjurlin’s involvement in the symposium reflects his broader work at UNC, where he serves as Director of Clinical Trials for the Department of Urology. Known for his commitment to patient-centered care and cutting-edge research, Dr. Bjurlin leads initiatives that explore novel diagnostic and treatment methodologies. His research has been instrumental in advancing minimally invasive procedures, including robotic surgery, and assessing the carcinogenic risks associated with emerging public health concerns like e-cigarette use.

Dr. Bjurlin has been recognized for his multidisciplinary collaborations, such as his ongoing studies into bladder cancer biomarkers funded by the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and NC TraCS. These investigations aim to identify carcinogens in e-cigarette users and their potential links to bladder cancer, a topic he has presented on at international conferences like the European Conference on Tobacco Control (ECTC).
