Ben was born in Frederick, MD, but was raised in Shepherdstown, WV, a small college town on the Potomac River. He attended West Virginia University where he studied biology and was the captain of the crew team. After graduating from WVU, Ben deferred matriculation at Vanderbilt University to volunteer and backpack through Central and South America.
