A Legacy of Excellence at UNC Urology
Heather’s journey with UNC Urology began 18 years ago, when she joined the department as its first oncology Advanced Practice Provider. Over the years, she has been instrumental in building a thriving APP team, growing from just two providers to an impressive team of 12 APPs serving both adult and pediatric patients. Her leadership has shaped the department’s recruitment, onboarding, and professional development strategies, and her contributions have been integral to advancing the department’s goals.
Among her many accomplishments, Heather co-directed the development of Urology’s first APP Fellowship program in collaboration with the UNC School of Nursing. She also played a pivotal role in establishing the Rapid Access program, which streamlines care for patients requiring expedited appointments for elevated PSA levels. Her dedication to clinical education extends beyond UNC, as she has co-authored national guidelines, book chapters, and publications on urologic best practices while mentoring countless APPs in the field.
Heather’s impact extends far beyond Chapel Hill. She has served in prominent roles within the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates (SUNA) and the American Urological Association (AUA). Highlights of her national leadership include:
- Chair of the AUA APP Education Committee (2016–2019), where she developed educational resources for APPs nationwide.
- Inaugural Recipient of the AUA APP of the Year Award in 2020, recognizing her leadership and contributions to the field.
- Induction into the Fellows Association of Urology Nurses and Associates (FAUNA) in 2021, honoring her sustained excellence in urology education and clinical practice.
Shaping APP Leadership at UNC Health
In her new role as APP Supervisor, Heather will oversee APP teams across ENT, Neurosurgery, and Urology. This position is part of a broader structure within the APP Center at the UNC Medical Center, which provides governance, mentorship, and workforce planning for APPs across the institution. Heather’s appointment reflects her proven ability to lead with compassion and vision, ensuring seamless collaboration among providers while maintaining the highest standard of patient care.
