In 1990, the Rhodes Family established the John Sloan & John Flint Distinguished Professorship to provide much-needed support for faculty at the UNC School of Medicine Department of Urology and which is currently held by Raj Pruthi, MD, Chair of UNC Department of Urology.

The Rhodes Family has had a deep connection with the Department of Urology in the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina since Dr. John Sloan Rhodes graduated from medical school in 1927. Dr. J. Flint Rhodes followed his father’s lead graduating from UNC School of Medicine in 1962, earning the honor of graduating second in his class. Both father and son became dedicated physicians in Raleigh, where they ran a private practice of Urology beginning in 1970. Following the elder’s retirement in 1980, Dr. Flint was associated with other Urologists until his retirement in 2001 and served as associate clinical professor of Urology at UNC School of Medicine.

After completing two years of Surgical Residency at UNC, Flint entered the U.S. Navy. Lieutenant Commander Rhodes served as Chief Medical Officer, U.S. Naval Station, Midway Island 1965-67. As a life member of the UNC Alumni Association, he was an avid Tar Heel fan and supporter. He was a true gentleman who lived his life in his own quiet way. Dr. Rhodes was a dedicated Physician who gave himself fully in providing the best possible medical care to his patients with respect for each individual. Dr. J. Flint Rhodes passed away at Rex Hospital on Thursday, March 7, 2019.
