Matthew Nielsen, MD, MS Associate Professor of Urology and Director of the Division of Urologic Oncology, has been appointed co-director of Cross-Institutional Quality Improvement Implementation efforts with the High Value Practice Academic Alliance (HVPAA).

The High Value Practice Academic Alliance (HVPAA) was created by leaders in the Johns Hopkins Health System in June 2016 to serve as an international forum for academic institutions to come together, advance successful value-based quality improvement and engage their trainees in this important work. After a very successful first year of operations, the HVPAA Executive Directors recognized the need for leadership expansion to effectively advance the various initiatives the organization had undertaken and created new directorship roles to lead different arms of the alliance.

Dr. Nielsen joins Hyung (Harry) Cho, MD, Director of Quality, Safety and Value in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Mt Sinai Hospital in New York City and Christine Soong, MD, Medical Lead, Urgent and Critical Care Centre of Excellence at Sinai Health System in Toronto as co-Directors of the HVPAA Cross-Institutional Quality Improvement Implementation efforts.

Nielsen received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins in 2002, he completed his residency at the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute in 2008 and served on the faculty there before joining UNC in 2009.
