Raj S. Pruthi, MD, MHA, FACS, was recently appointed as the new chair of the UCSF Department of Urology, effective January 1, 2020. Dr. Pruthi most recently served as the Rhodes Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Urology at UNC.

Dr. Pruthi came to UNC in 2000 as an Assistant Professor where he helped start the multidisciplinary program in Genitourinary Oncology. After serving as Head of Urologic Oncology in the Division of Urologic Surgery, he served as Division Head for two years before leading its transition to a department in 2013, where the department grew from five to 14 physicians and 6 advanced practice provider faculty members. The outstanding reputation for clinical excellence was maintained throughout this expansion, with eleven faculty members listed as “Top Doctors” and five faculty achieving tenure.

The faculty built a strong multi-million-dollar urology research program at UNC-Chapel Hill where research funding has grown exponentially, primarily in health services research, in the areas of urologic oncology, stone disease, reconstructive urology, and men’s health.

Additionally, the residency program was recently nationally recognized. Of the fifteen residents graduating in the past five years, ten obtained prestigious, competitive national and international fellowship positions in various subspecialties.

“Although I am looking forward to the opportunity ahead at UCSF, after almost 20 years in Chapel Hill, I will miss my colleagues and friends here at UNC.

UNC’s collaborative environment has been instrumental to my professional development and the success and growth of UNC Urology. The talented faculty in the Department of Urology are some of the best and brightest in our field, and UNC Urology is destined to a bright and successful future.”
