Mary Dunn, RN, MSN, OCN, NP-C of UNC Urology was recently selected to receive the Oncology Nursing Excellence Award for 2014.
Mary has been with the Department of Urology and Medical Oncology since 2010 as an adult nurse practitioner and has served as adjunct faculty for the UNC School of Nursing since 2011. She is also a UNC Lineberger member.
Mary developed and currently coordinates a monthly Testicular Cancer Survivorship Clinic and is working to develop additional survivorship clinics for other genitourinary malignancies. She serves in leadership positions for numerous professional associations and is a founding member of the North Carolina Triangle Chapter of the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network. She also mentors fellow nurse practitioner students and has published many articles. Mary began the Kaps for Kids campaign during the fall and winter months, collecting and distributing hats for children with cancer. She is known to her colleagues and patients as a skilled and caring nurse practitioner. As one nominator wrote of Mary, “She has excelled across the board in education, leadership, community involvement, clinical expertise, patients and family members rave about her exceptionally compassionate and personalized approach to patient care, interpersonal skills and mentoring.”
The award recognizes her hard work and dedication over the past year and throughout her time here at UNC. Additionally, the award comes with a $1500 educational scholarship sponsored by Lineberger, and was presented at a ceremony on Monday, November 24th at the Cancer Hospital. The Oncology Nursing Excellence Award is presented in memory of Charmayne S. Gray, an exceptional oncology nurse whose passing resulted from an auto accident in 2002.
