In the latest Doximity ratings for 2026-2027, UNC Urology’s residency program ranked #19 in the country, placing it among the highest rated specialty programs of its kind, and further solidifying its long-standing position as one of the most desirable urology training programs among leading academic medical centers.
The UNC Urology Residency Program is widely recognized for its cutting-edge training in the most advanced diagnostic and surgical techniques, innovative use of the latest advances in robotic surgery, and its dynamic yet supportive and collegial learning environment.
Led by Dr. Kristy Borawski, Professor of Urology and Vice Chair of Education, the UNC residency program is renowned for its proven success at preparing residents to move into the most competitive fellowship programs or practice opportunities upon graduation, and providing outstanding, deep, and well-rounded training for their future careers in urology.
“We’re incredibly proud of this recognition, but what means the most to me is that it reflects the people who make our program special,” said Dr. Borawski.
“Our residents, faculty, and staff have built a culture where people are challenged, supported, and genuinely enjoy working with one another. That combination, along with a commitment to outstanding clinical and surgical training, is what makes UNC such a special place to train.”
Dr. Matthew Nielsen, Chair of the UNC Department of Urology and John Sloan Rhodes and John Flint Rhodes Distinguished Professor of Urology, added, “We enjoy and are proud of our shared commitment to creating a continuously improving environment where all on our team can learn, thrive, and grow together. Recognition like this from our colleagues around the country is a true honor, and encourages us to redouble our efforts—better knows no limit.”

Amazing operative training (aka no fellowship needed), true work life balance during residency, a PD who bleeds for the residents, family-like resident culture, and the ability to do anything I want after residency with a chair who will actively support my path whatever it will be. I can’t imagine a better place to train.”

I had a BLAST in my residency here.”
