About<\/h2>\n

Dr. Katherine Chan completed medical school at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, followed by Urology residency at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. She went on to complete a three-year pediatric urology fellowship at Boston Children\u2019s Hospital, Harvard Medical School in 2013. As part of the fellowship, she completed the Harvard-wide Pediatric Health Services Fellowship, earning a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. Before joining the Department of Urology at UNC in 2021, Dr. Chan was an Assistant Professor of Urology at Indiana University School of Medicine for over 7 years where she was co-director of the pediatric kidney stone clinic at Riley Hospital for Children. While at IU, she expanded access to care for underserved rural and urban communities in the state of Indiana and maintained a clinical and surgical practice for those patients throughout her tenure.<\/p>\n

Dr. Chan is a diplomate of the American Board of Urology and is board certified in general and pediatric urology. She specializes in pediatric urology and is an expert in the surgical treatment of hypospadias, undescended testes, and kidney stones. <\/p>\n

As a surgeon-scientist, Dr. Chan served as Principal Investigator on multiple NIH-funded research projects between 2017 and 2024. Her team developed and pilot-tested a novel decision-making tool designed to support parents of children with hypospadias. In recognition of this work, they were awarded a $3 million R01 grant from the NIH in August 2024 to evaluate the tool in a multi-site randomized controlled trial. In parallel, they created a patient-centered outcomes instrument to study the long-term effects of childhood hypospadias repair in adolescents and young adults. The instrument is currently undergoing validation in multiple languages by members of the International Research Committee of the Hypospadias International Society.<\/p>\n

Dr. Chan is a previous member of the Hypospadias Task Force of the Societies of Pediatric Urology. She has served as a reviewer for multiple journals including the Journal of Pediatric Urology, Journal of Urology, Urology and JAMA Pediatrics.<\/p>\n

In January 2025, Dr. Chan transitioned to the biotechnology industry and currently serves as Senior Medical Director at enGene, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company. In this role, she acts as a medical monitor for a global clinical trial evaluating a non-viral gene therapy for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. She continues to maintain a part-time practice with UNC Urology at UNC Sanford and UNC Chatham, providing care to children in the greater Chapel Hill area. As part of her transition, she also transferred leadership of her team\u2019s NIH R01grant to Dr. Samantha Schilling in the UNC Department of Pediatrics. <\/p>\n
