There are several subtypes of RCC, and each behaves differently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div role=\"tablist\" class=\"panel-group  oscitas-bootstrap-container\" id=\"unc-accordion-0\">\n\n<div class=\"panel panel-default oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n    <div id=\"panel-heading-details-0-0\" class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\" role=\"tab\">\n\n        <h2 class=\"panel-title oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n            <button class=\"accordion-toggle oscitas-bootstrap-container collapsed\" \n                id = \"button-details-0-0\"\n                data-toggle=\"collapse\"\n                data-parent=\"#unc-accordion-0\"    \n                aria-controls=\"#details-0-0\"  \n                aria-expanded=\"false\" \n                href=\"#details-0-0\">\n                Symptoms            <\/button>\n\n        <\/h2>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div id=\"details-0-0\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n        <div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\nLearn about the variety of symptoms that can be associated with Kidney Cancer<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most cases are diagnosed by imaging (x-rays, ultrasound, CT, and MRI) in patients who do not have any symptoms at all.<\/li>\n<li>Blood in the urine can be a symptom or sign of kidney cancer (among other problems)\n<ul>\n<li>Visible blood (\u201cgross hematuria\u201d) should prompt a patient to visit a medical professional.<\/li>\n<li>Blood the doctor finds on urine testing (\u201cmicroscopic hematuria\u201d) prompts an evaluation that sometimes reveals RCC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Pain or swelling in the flank: This is rare<\/li>\n<li>Weight loss<\/li>\n<li>Pain from sites where RCC has spread<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n        \n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"panel panel-default oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n    <div id=\"panel-heading-details-0-1\" class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\" role=\"tab\">\n\n        <h2 class=\"panel-title oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n            <button class=\"accordion-toggle oscitas-bootstrap-container collapsed\" \n                id = \"button-details-0-1\"\n                data-toggle=\"collapse\"\n                data-parent=\"#unc-accordion-0\"    \n                aria-controls=\"#details-0-1\"  \n                aria-expanded=\"false\" \n                href=\"#details-0-1\">\n                Diagnosis            <\/button>\n\n        <\/h2>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div id=\"details-0-1\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n        <div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\nHow is Kidney Cancer diagnosed?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The majority of RCC are diagnosed \u201cincidentally\u201d when patients undergo X-rays or imaging procedures for other reasons, such as back pain, or abdominal pain.\n<ul>\n<li>Other times they are found when symptoms such as the above prompt a workup by a medical professional<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>CT scan and MRI are commonly used to diagnose RCC. These show great detail of the kidneys as well as lymph nodes, blood vessels, and other organs to identify tumors, or their spread, and to plan treatment<\/li>\n<li>A chest x-ray can show the spread of RCC to the lungs, and can also be used for follow up appointments<\/li>\n<li>Ultrasound of the kidneys can identify RCC but is less detailed than CT and MRI<\/li>\n<li>Bone scan, PET scan, and IVP are x-rays that should be used only in very specific situations<\/li>\n<li>A biopsy is sometimes done to prove that a growth on the kidney is RCC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n    <\/div>\n        \n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"panel panel-default oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n    <div id=\"panel-heading-details-0-2\" class=\"panel-heading oscitas-bootstrap-container\" role=\"tab\">\n\n        <h2 class=\"panel-title oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n            <button class=\"accordion-toggle oscitas-bootstrap-container collapsed\" \n                id = \"button-details-0-2\"\n                data-toggle=\"collapse\"\n                data-parent=\"#unc-accordion-0\"    \n                aria-controls=\"#details-0-2\"  \n                aria-expanded=\"false\" \n                href=\"#details-0-2\">\n                Treatment            <\/button>\n\n        <\/h2>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div id=\"details-0-2\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n\n        <div class=\"panel-body oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\nLearn about treatment options<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In cases where the RCC has not spread, the main treatment is surgery\n<ul>\n<li><a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nlm.nih.gov\/medlineplus\/ency\/article\/003001.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nephrectomy<\/a> (total or radical) removes the entire kidney<\/li>\n<li>Partial nephrectomy removes just the tumor and leaves the rest of the kidney in place<\/li>\n<li>These operations can be done in several ways, including traditional large incisions and minimally invasive ways. Laparoscopic and robotic techniques use small incisions to make recovery from the surgery less painful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Small tumors can often grow slowly and three options can be considered based on the patient\u2019s overall health and preferences\n<ul>\n<li>Observation with treatment if growth occurs<\/li>\n<li>Surgical removal<\/li>\n<li>Treatment is known as \u201cablative therapy\u201d where the tumor is killed by freezing it (\u201c<a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/cancertopics\/factsheet\/Therapy\/cryosurgery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cryotherapy<\/a>\u201d) or heating it (\u201c<a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.radiologyinfo.org\/en\/info.cfm?pg=rfakidney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">radiofrequency ablation<\/a>\u201d or RFA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>When RCC has spread, known as metastatic disease, there are treatments that can be effective in controlling cancer. These are not chemotherapy or radiation treatments, but rather pills that work by stopping blood vessel growth (\u201cangiogenesis inhibitors\u201d) in the tumor or in the metastases. If a tumor cannot grow blood vessels, it often stops enlarging because it can\u2019t get enough nutrition.\n<ul>\n<li>Sometimes surgery is still done in these cases and is known as cytoreductive nephrectomy, because the angiogenesis inhibitor medications may work better if there is less cancer to be treated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.radiologyinfo.org\/en\/info.cfm?pg=cathembol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Embolization<\/a> is done in rare situations.
