His dedication, expertise, and leadership have significantly shaped our department and the field of urology in the years that have followed, and he has since become the Department of Urology&#8217;s Vice Chair of Education, Residency Program Director, Professor of Urology, the UNC Men&#8217;s Health Program Director, and a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11312\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 217px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/surgery\/wallen-named-aua-teacher-of-the-year\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11312 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/637\/2024\/07\/wallen-named-aua-teacher-of-the-year-image2-207x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/637\/2024\/07\/wallen-named-aua-teacher-of-the-year-image2-207x300.jpeg 207w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/637\/2024\/07\/wallen-named-aua-teacher-of-the-year-image2-707x1024.jpeg 707w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/637\/2024\/07\/wallen-named-aua-teacher-of-the-year-image2-768x1112.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/637\/2024\/07\/wallen-named-aua-teacher-of-the-year-image2-600x869.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/637\/2024\/07\/wallen-named-aua-teacher-of-the-year-image2-560x811.jpeg 560w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/637\/2024\/07\/wallen-named-aua-teacher-of-the-year-image2.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">2012 AUA Teacher of the Year Award<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Among his many awards and accolades, Dr. Wallen was honored with the annual resident-selected \u201cFaculty Teaching Award\u201d from 2004-2010, before he recused himself from future consideration to permit others to receive this recognition.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, he was appointed the Urology Resident Program Director, and in 2012, he received the national <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/surgery\/wallen-named-aua-teacher-of-the-year\/\">American Urological Association\u2019s (AUA) \u201cTeacher of the Year\u201d Award<\/a>, recognizing his outstanding contributions to urology education.<\/p>\n<p>His educational achievements led to his election to the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in 2017, where he served as a Residency Review Committee member on the Milestones 2.0 project, and in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/eric-wallen-md-facs-elected-chair-of-acgme-review-committee-for-urology\/\">2020 was elected the Chair of the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Urology<\/a>. During that time Dr. Wallen also contributed to the AUA\u2019s Education Council, contributing to the evaluation of lifelong learning opportunities for urologists in practice.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, Dr. Wallen received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/dr-eric-wallen-receives-aoes-lifetime-achievement-award-in-medical-education\/\">UNC School of Medicine Academy of Educators Lifetime Achievement Award in Medical Education<\/a>. This award recognized his 20+ years of sustained excellence in teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, and fellows.<\/p>\n<div class=\"desktop-only\" style=\"float: right; width: 25vw; margin: 10px 0 10px 10px;\"><div class=\"video-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"349\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C0XH2oCt-0E?html5=1\" title=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"mobile-only\"><div class=\"video-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"349\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C0XH2oCt-0E?html5=1\" title=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Dr. Wallen&#8217;s impact extends beyond education. He has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/unc-mens-health-program-carolina-demography-launch-innovative-web-tool-to-combat-prostate-cancer-disparities-in-north-carolina\/\">driving force in improving prostate cancer outcomes in North Carolina<\/a>, particularly for Black men and Native Americans who are disproportionately affected. His efforts led to the establishment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/menshealth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNC Men\u2019s Health Program<\/a>, where he served as Executive Director. This program, a collaborative effort across multiple departments, aims to improve the health behaviors of men of all ages through research, community outreach, and clinical care. Most recently, he took on a role as the Physician Champion of the UNC Health Supply Chain optimization program.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Wallen\u2019s commitment to global health has taken him to Cuba and China on multiple visiting professorships. He has been named to America\u2019s Best Doctors multiple times and is a founding member of the UNC Computer and Robotic Enhanced Surgery Center (CARES) Advisory Board.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond his clinical and educational roles, Dr. Wallen has been an active researcher with interests in robotic surgery, outcomes, and translational research. His commitment to patient-centered, cutting-edge care will leave a lasting legacy at UNC.<\/p>\n<p>Please join us in thanking Dr. Wallen for his incredible contributions to our UNC Urology Family, the Graduate Medical Education community both locally and nationally, and to the patients of North Carolina and beyond.
