Dr. Bjurlin, an Associate Professor of Urology, UNC Urology\u2019s Director of Clinical Trials, and a Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center Member, brings an exceptional track record of leadership, innovation, and patient-centered research that has already made a significant impact at UNC and beyond.<\/p>\n<h2>A Vision for Growth and Innovation in Urologic Research<\/h2>\n<p>Dr. Bjurlin steps into this role following Dr. Katherine Chan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/dr-katherine-chan-to-become-unc-urologys-first-vice-chair-for-research\/\">who served as the inaugural Vice Chair of Research<\/a> and helped establish a strong foundation for urologic investigation within the department. As Vice Chair, Dr. Bjurlin will focus on expanding clinical trials, fostering multidisciplinary collaborations, and securing funding opportunities to propel UNC Urology\u2019s research forward.<\/p>\n<p>His leadership in clinical trials has already positioned UNC Urology as a hub for cutting-edge research. He has played a pivotal role in bringing advanced diagnostic and treatment techniques to patients, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/unc-urologists-perform-innovative-transperineal-biopsies-to-reduce-risks-and-optimize-prostate-cancer-detection\/\">transperineal prostate biopsy methods<\/a> and the integration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/koelis-mri-fusion-biopsy-system-introduced-at-unc-health\/\">KOELIS MRI Fusion Biopsy System<\/a>, which enhances precision in prostate cancer detection. He has served on national committees such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/dr-bjurlin-to-lead-imaging-team-in-auas-new-technologies-imaging-committee\/\">American Urological Association\u2019s (AUA) New Technologies &amp; Imaging Committee<\/a>, where he has led efforts to establish best practices for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urologytimes.com\/view\/aua-updates-policy-statement-mpmri-prostate-ca\">multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) in prostate cancer care<\/a>. His research has also gained international attention, and led to invited presentations at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/dr-marc-bjurlin-takes-the-stage-in-florence-italy-at-the-8th-annual-european-conference-on-tobacco-control\/\">European Conference on Tobacco Control<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/bjurlin-shares-expertise-with-the-oncological-urology-section-of-the-polish-urological-society-in-warsaw-poland\/\">Oncological Urology Section of the Polish Urological Society in Warsaw, Poland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond his individual research contributions, Dr. Bjurlin has been instrumental in strengthening UNC\u2019s collaborative research efforts. He was a member of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/bjurlin-member-of-research-team-awarded-nih-r01-grant\/\">multi-institutional research team awarded an NIH R01 grant<\/a> to develop tailored screening approaches for urinary system cancers in patients with chronic kidney disease.
