She will assume the role on June 1, 2025, following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/intranet\/2024\/10\/bogdewic-announces-retirement\/\">retirement of Dr. Stephen Bogdewic<\/a>, who has led the office since 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Smith\u2019s appointment marks a significant milestone in a career defined by leadership, service, and impact. Since January 2023, she has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/unc-school-of-medicine-names-dr-angela-smith-as-associate-dean-for-faculty-affairs-and-leadership-development\/\">served as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development<\/a>, where she has shaped innovative programs and policies aimed at improving career development, faculty vitality, and leadership culture across the School of Medicine. Her forward-thinking approach has positioned her as a trusted resource for faculty, staff, and institutional leaders committed to fostering professional growth and academic excellence.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout her career, Dr. Smith has been recognized with some of the University\u2019s highest honors, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/2020-hettleman-prize-awarded-to-dr-angela-smith\/\">Hettleman Prize for Artistic and Scholarly Achievement<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/smith-selected-as-2020-21-yang-family-biomedical-scholar\/\">Yang Family Biomedical Scholars Award<\/a>, and, most recently, induction into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/dr-angela-smith-inducted-into-the-order-of-the-golden-fleece-uncs-highest-honor-society\/\">the Order of the Golden Fleece<\/a>, UNC\u2019s oldest and most prestigious honorary society. Nationally, she is also a recipient of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/american-urological-association-honors-smith-with-gold-cystoscope-award\/\">AUA Gold Cystoscope Award<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/dr-angela-smith-recipient-of-the-2023-swiu-christina-manthos-mentoring-award\/\">Christina Manthos Mentoring Award from the Society of Women in Urology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As she steps into this interim leadership position, Dr. Smith brings a deep understanding of the institutional landscape and a passion for building supportive academic environments.
