highlighted by SWIU as authors of a published paper that illustrates the innovative research and patient-centered approach to care for which UNC Urology is renowned.<\/p>\n<p>In the BJUI paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/bjui-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/bju.16794\">\u201cFeasibility and outcomes of interventions to reduce cystoscopy discomfort,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 investigators gained valuable insights showing that patients who elected to receive added interventions such as listening to music on headphones or real-time visualization experienced less discomfort and anxiety during cystoscopies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/bju.16794\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"box-shadow: 0 2px 4px 0 rgba(0, 0, 0, .25);\" class=\"aligncenter charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>A Tradition of National Thought Leadership Among UNC Urology Faculty Focused on Education, Research and Excellence in Patient Care<\/h2>\n<p>Dr. Angela Smith, UNC Urology Professor and Vice Chair of Academic Affairs, is widely recognized as a leading urology expert and thought leader. Among her many professional roles, she serves as a Board Member and President Elect of the <a href=\"https:\/\/swiu.org\/home.aspx\">Society of Women in Urology<\/a> (SWIU), and is chair for the organization\u2019s upcoming annual meeting. In addition to being an expert presenter at numerous national scientific meetings and a widely recognized published researcher, Dr. Smith has received many professional awards and recognition. A few of which include the AUA Gold Cystoscope award, the Christina Manthos Mentoring Award from SWIU, and being inducted into UNC\u2019s most prestigious honor society, the Order of the Golden Fleece.<\/p>\n<p>Avani Desai, a UNC MD candidate (Class of 2026), has been featured in several published articles, with a focus on addressing key issues related to patient care and medical education.<\/p>\n<p>UNC Urology is Proud of the Ongoing Achievements of its Team Members\u2019 Many Achievements<\/p>\n<p>Examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kristy Borawski, Katherine Chan, Sherry Ross, Angela Smith, and Mary Beth Westerman were among the recipients of the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/unc-urology-faculty-recognized-as-2025-castle-connolly-top-doctors\/\">2025 Castle Connolly Top Doctors listing<\/a>. In addition, Drs. Borawski, Ross and Smith were also honored as \u201cExceptional Women in Medicine.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Mary Beth Westerman played a leadership role with the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/dr-mary-beth-westerman-helps-lead-2025-aua-guideline-amendment-on-microhematuria\/\">2025 AUA Guidelines Amendment on Microhematuria<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>UNC Urology NP Mary Dunn plays a vital role in helping lead the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/supporting-survivors-unc-urologys-role-in-testicular-cancer-survivorship\/\">Testicular Cancer Survivorship Clinic<\/a> at UNC. She is also a nationally recognized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/people\/mary-dunn\/\">speaker and award recipient<\/a> in topics such as bladder cancer, and has served in positions with the AUA and BCAN, in addition to being a leader and advocate among Urology APPs.<\/li>\n<li>Kristy Borawski, who has received numerous awards and is widely recognized as a leader in medical education, was recently selected as UNC Urology\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/unc-urology-announces-dr-kristy-borawski-as-new-residency-program-director\/\">Residency Program Director<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Kathryn Gessner has been honored with being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/dr-kathryn-hacker-gessner-named-to-uncs-physician-scientist-training-program\/\">selected for the UNC Physician Scientist Training Program<\/a>, in addition to having received many other awards and recognition such as the 2023 BCAN Young Investigator Award, the ASCI Emerging Generation Award, and the Tomasello \u201cWomen Who Conquer Cancer Young Investigator\u201d award.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/directory\/brooke-spratte\/\"> Brooke Spratte<\/a>, a 4th year resident, recently received the Urology Department\u2019s \u201cExcellence in Research\u201d award. She previously received recognition for excellence and dedication in \u201cTeaching as a Resident\u201d within the department.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We are proud to recognize and celebrate these \u2013
