Through longitudinal engagement with faculty mentors and hands-on clinical learning, the course introduces students to the core competencies required for patient care including history-taking, physical examination, communication, clinical reasoning, patient-centered care, and professionalism. The course is structured around weekly small-group sessions, where students work closely with physician tutors to practice clinical skills and discuss patient cases.

As a PCC faculty tutor, Dr. Pham will lead one of these small groups during the Foundation Phase of the medical curriculum, meeting weekly with students as they develop the clinical and professional skills that will shape their future patient care.

A Strong Connection to the UNC School of Medicine

Dr. Pham’s selection reflects his continued ties to the UNC School of Medicine and his commitment to advancing its educational mission. A North Carolina native, he earned his medical degree from the UNC School of Medicine before completing his urology residency at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He returned to Chapel Hill to join the UNC Department of Urology as a faculty member, bringing his clinical expertise and passion for education back to the institution where he trained.

Clinically, Dr. Pham specializes in general urology, with interests in kidney stone disease and prostate conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer. He has a particular interest in expanding healthcare access to the local community. His clinics are strategically located in Chatham county to improve access to urologic care for residents of rural North Carolina.

Investing in Leadership and Medical Education

Dr. Pham has also demonstrated a strong commitment to developing as an academic leader and educator. In 2024 Dr. Pham completed the Leadership in Academic Medicine Program (LAMP) through the UNC School of Medicine’s Office of Faculty Affairs and Leadership Development.

He is involved in urology related-education in all phases of the medical education at UNC. Prior to his selection as a PCC tutor, he taught the Male Reproductive Health Peer Accelerated Learning Sessions and taught students the male genitalia and rectal examination in the Foundation phase. He serves as the Urology Clerkship director, Career Goal Advisor for Urology, and Urology Interest Group Faculty Advisor for medical students.

His selection as a PCC tutor represents another step in this trajectory—supporting the development of future physicians while continuing to strengthen UNC’s culture of mentorship, clinical education, and academic leadership.

Dr. Minh Nguyen Pham, Assistant Professor of Urology, has been selected to serve as a faculty tutor for the Patient Centered Care (PCC) course within the UNC School of Medicine’s Medical Doctorate curriculum beginning in the Fall 2026 term.
