Smith, MD, MS, FACS<\/a> on being presented with one of this year&#8217;s <a href=\"#award\">Best of BCAN awards<\/a> at the <a href=\"#summit\">2019 Bladder Cancer Summit for Patients and Families<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lead\">Dr. Smith has been actively engaged with BCAN for several years, serving on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcan.org\/staff-page\/angela-b-smith-md-ms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">BCAN Scientific Advisory Board<\/a>\u00a0and leading\u00a0two\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcori.org\/funding-opportunities\/research-support-funding-opportunities\/eugene-washington-pcori-engagement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Engagement Awards<\/a>\u00a0from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) incorporating the BCAN\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcori.org\/research-results\/2014\/bladder-cancer-patient-survey-network-research-prioritization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Patient Survey Network<\/a>\u00a0in the research prioritization process\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcori.org\/research-results\/2017\/patient-empowerment-through-engagement-research-training-bladder-cancer-pcor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">creating a research training curriculum<\/a>\u00a0to empower patient partners in bladder cancer research.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcori.org\/research-results\/pcori-stories\/engagement-awards-teams-ride-momentum-research-projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Based on this work<\/a>, PCORI identified treatment options for patients with BCG-refractory bladder cancer as a research priority and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/8-5-million-in-funding-approved-for-bladder-cancer-treatment-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Dr. Smith is now co-Principal Investigator<\/a>\u00a0on the PCORI Large Pragmatic Study, Comparison of Intravesical Therapy and Surgery as Treatment Options for Bladder Cancer (CISTO).\u00a0 Additionally, she is leading a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcori.org\/research-results\/2019\/promoting-implementation-patient-engagement-pipe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">third PCORI Engagement Award<\/a>\u00a0supporting the next phase of this work, creating additional resources to support further engagement of patient partners in bladder cancer research.<\/p>\n<script>\n\n    (function($) {\n        $(\"body, html\").addClass(\"heels_full_width_overflow\");\n    })(jQuery);\n\n   <\/script>\n   <div style=\"background-color:#4b9cd3;\" class=\"full-width-contained whitebackground \">\n<div class=\"row  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-4 col-md-4 col-xs-12 col-sm-4 oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<div class=\"entry-content-asset\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This week, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/angiesmith_uro?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@angiesmith_uro<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UNC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@UNC<\/a> received a Best of BCAN award at our annual Summit for Patients and Families, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BCANSummit19?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BCANSummit19<\/a>. One of the highlights of the Summit is the Best of BCAN Awards which recognizes volunteer excellence and commitment to the bladder cancer community.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s Bladder Cancer Summit was held on October 4th and 5th and offered sessions providing information on recent medical advances and how patient advocates can engage in research and help to change the diagnosis and treatment landscape for all bladder cancer patients.<\/p>\n<h2>About BCAN<\/h2>\n<p>BCAN was founded in 2005 and is the only national advocacy organization devoted to advancing bladder cancer research and supporting those impacted by the disease.<\/p>\n<p>BCAN is on the front-lines advocating for greater public awareness and increased funding for research to identify effective treatments and eventually, a cure for bladder cancer. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcan.org\/about-us\/\">Learn More About BCAN<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to Angela B.
