He is committed to providing compassionate, individualized, patient-centered care, and has been named by his peers among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/eight-unc-urology-faculty-included-in-latest-edition-of-best-doctors-in-america\/\">Best Doctors in America in Urology<\/a> since 2013 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/5-unc-urology-faculty-physicians-join-growing-list-of-departments-castle-connolly-top-doctors\/\">Castle Connolly Top Doctors<\/a> since 2017. He has served the Department as the Physician Service Leader and Vice-Chair for Academic Affairs. He is also a member of the adjunct faculty in the Departments of Epidemiology and Health Policy &amp; Management in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. Outside of UNC, he is a Clinical Investigator in the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research.<\/p>\n<p>Nielsen\u2019s research interests in clinical epidemiology, cancer care quality, and medical decision-making dovetail with his clinical practice. This work has been supported by strong interdisciplinary collaborations and continuous extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the American Cancer Society and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute and nationally recognized with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/dr-matthew-nielsen-receives-urology-care-foundation-astellas-rising-stars-in-urology-research-award\/\">Rising Stars in Urology Research Award<\/a>. Work with the <a href=\"https:\/\/unclineberger.org\/news-archives\/nielsen-best-practices\/\">American College of Physicians High Value Care Task Force<\/a> on the diagnostic evaluation of hematuria led to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/unc-led-study-comparing-tradeoffs-between-benefit-harm-and-cost-in-hematuria-evaluation-published-in-jama-internal-medicine\/\">collaborative research program<\/a> that informed major revisions to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/new-2020-aua-hematuria-guidelines\/\">American Urological Association\u2019s Hematuria Guideline<\/a> this year. His commitment to education was recognized by the UNC Urology residents as Attending of the Year in 2014, and he is passionate about mentorship, with mentee first-authors for nearly half (74) of his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=matthew+nielsen\">greater than 160 peer-reviewed publications<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside his clinical and research activities, Dr. Nielsen supports quality improvement and patient safety activities in his capacity as Associate Director of the UNC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ihqi\/directory\/matt-nielsen-md-ms\/\">Institute for Healthcare Quality Improvement<\/a> and other leadership roles in the UNC Health Care System, where he received the Physician Friend of Nursing Award in 2017. He is active in this space on a national level as the Chair of the American Urological Association\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/nielsen-appointed-chair-of-aua-quality-improvement-and-patient-safety-committee\/\">Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Committee<\/a>\u00a0and was recognized with the AUA\u2019s Young Urologist of the Year Award in 2018.
