{"id":38,"date":"2023-10-17T18:55:05","date_gmt":"2023-10-17T18:55:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/cells\/?page_id=38"},"modified":"2025-04-10T14:36:49","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T14:36:49","slug":"events","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/cells\/syndication\/events\/","title":{"rendered":"Events"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class = \"alert alert-info  oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">In addition to the documentation below, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/cells\/syndication\/events\/event-syndication-training-videos\/\"><strong>training videos<\/strong><\/a> are available to guide you through a couple scenarios for creating an Event syndication Cell.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Creating An Event Syndication Cell<\/h2>\n<p>Many fields are self explanatory and will not be addressed in this documentation. This documentation will focus on tips, best practices and explanation of fields that generally need some clarification. This is a list of fields for all three layouts (list types). Not all fields are available for every layout.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/cells\/general-usage\/pre-asses\/\">Determine where the Cell will be used<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In the Dashboard, select <strong>Cells<\/strong> in either the top or left-hand navigation.\n<ul>\n<li>If you do not see this option, then the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/cells\/general-usage#activate\"><strong>UNCSOM Cells<\/strong> plugin needs to be activated<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Select the <strong>Add New<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cell Name:<\/strong>\u00a0 be descriptive! Our recommendation is to use a naming convention that is clear as to what the cell is, and where it is likely to be used. This name will not be visible on the front end of the website. It only displays on the Cells page in the Dashboard.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Layout:<\/strong> Syndication<\/li>\n<li>Select the <strong>syndication type<\/strong>:\n<ol>\n<li><strong>This Site Only<\/strong> &#8211; allows you to display the events from your website using the custom styles and layouts in the Cells product.<\/li>\n<li><strong>This Site + Syndication<\/strong> &#8211; allows you to display your site&#8217;s events mixed with that of another site.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Syndication Only<\/strong> &#8211; displays only events from another site.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Post Type:<\/strong> Events<\/li>\n<li><strong>List Type:<\/strong> there are 3 different layout styles to chose from. View the example pages for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/cells\/syndication\/events\/vertical-examples\/\">Vertical<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/cells\/syndication\/events\/multi-column-examples\/\">Multi-Column<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/cells\/syndication\/events\/carousel-examples\/\">Carousel<\/a>,\u00a0layouts to see which best suits your needs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Timeframe<\/strong>: you have the option of displaying either future or past events.\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Four Digit Start Year:<\/strong> use this setting to control the range of <strong>past<\/strong> events displayed in the Cell. Define the earliest year from which the plugin should pull events. Only events occurring from the specified year onwards are included in the display. For example, if you set this to &#8220;2023,&#8221; the plugin will only display events occurring from the year 2023 onwards.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Read More Link<\/strong>: enabling this option adds a customizable link to the end of the events. Use this when you wish to direct site visitors to additional events.\n<ol>\n<li><strong>More Link Text:<\/strong>\u00a0ensure the link text is meaningful and descriptive. It should accurately describe the link\u2019s destination and\/or purpose (e.g. \u201cSee all grand rounds\u201c).\u00a0 Avoid uninformative link phrases such as &#8220;Read More.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>More Link URL:\u00a0<\/strong>provide the URL you want the More Link Text to link to.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amount To Display<\/strong>: defines how many events to display. Setting this to 0 will display all events.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Include Image:<\/strong> this option allows you to specify whether you want to display an image or stylized date within the Cell.\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Image Type:<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Featured Image:<\/strong> Selecting this option will display the featured image associated with the event. If no featured image is assigned, a placeholder image related to UNC will display instead.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stylized Date:<\/strong> this will display a more prominent and stylized representation of the event date. This option offers a visually appealing alternative to the featured image, focusing attention on the date itself.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Image Aspect Ratio:<\/strong>\u00a0there and four image size options to chose from. Note that image clipping my occur due to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/cells\/general-usage\/responsive-design\/\">responsive design<\/a> of Cells.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Include Day and Time:<\/strong> this options adds the day of the week and time of the event. This option is not available on the Vertical list type (layout).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Title Lines:<\/strong> this option controls the display of event titles within the Cell. It allows you to limit the amount of the title that is shown. This can be useful if there are events with lengthy titles.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Custom Title Lines:<\/strong> If you chose the &#8220;<strong>Custom<\/strong>&#8221; option for <strong>Title Lines<\/strong>, you will need to define the max number of lines dedicated to displaying the title of the event. If a title is longer than the number of lines specified, it will be truncated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Include Excerpt:<\/strong> this option controls whether the event excerpt content will be displayed in the Cell.\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Tip<\/strong>:\u00a0It is important to provide an excerpt when creating events. This ensures that your event&#8217;s key information is presented correctly. If no excerpt is provided, the system will use text from the body of the event but will strip out any images, buttons, lists, and multimedia like videos or iframes. Only plain text will be used to create the description. This can lead to the omission of important details and formatting issues.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Custom Excerpt Lines:<\/strong> if you chose the &#8220;<strong>Custom<\/strong>&#8221; option for<strong> Excerpt Lines<\/strong>, you will need to define the max number of lines dedicated to displaying the excerpt of the event. If an excerpt is longer than the number of lines specified, it will be truncated.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Include Categories<\/strong> and <strong>Include Tags<\/strong>: these options display any categories and\/or tags assigned to the event.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Custom Category \/ Tag Lines:\u00a0<\/strong>If you chose the &#8220;<strong>Custom<\/strong>&#8221; option for <strong>Category Lines or Tag Lines<\/strong>, you will need to define the max number of lines dedicated to displaying the categories\/tags of the event. If the number of categories\/tags is longer than the number of lines specified, it will be truncated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Syndication Site URLs<\/strong>:\n<ol>\n<li>In the \u201c<strong>Enter Site Slug or URL<\/strong>\u201d field, enter the slug of the site you wish to pull events from then click the <strong>Add Site<\/strong> button. See below for a detailed explanation of what a site slug is.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Categories<\/strong> and <strong>Tags<\/strong>: this offers the ability to limit the syndication feed to events assigned specific <strong>Categories<\/strong> or <strong>Tags<\/strong>. Rather than display all events, this allows you to control which subset of events get displayed. See below for a detailed explanation of how to refine the syndication using Categories and\/or Tags.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click the <strong>Create Cell<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re ready, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/cells\/general-usage\/using-a-cell\/\">display the Cell<\/a> on your website.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/cells\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1388\/2024\/05\/event-components.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1321\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/cells\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1388\/2024\/05\/event-components.jpg\" alt=\"This screenshot is an example of the Multi-column layout for syndicated events. No additional source sites need to be defined.<\/li>\n<li><strong>This Site + Syndication<\/strong> \u2013 your current site is already included. Simply add any additional School of Medicine site(s) you wish to pull events from.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Syndication Only<\/strong> \u2013 add the School of Medicine site(s) you wish to pull events from. Although your current site is listed as a source, it will be ignored.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>How To Add a Source Site<\/h3>\n<p>Additional sites will be added to the <strong>&#8220;Enter Site Slug or URL<\/strong>&#8221; field.<\/p>\n<h4>Adding a Site by URL<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Navigate to the homepage of the site you want to add.<\/li>\n<li>Copy the <strong>base URL<\/strong> (e.g., https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/cardiology). Copying the URL from the site will ensure you don&#8217;t mis-type it.<\/li>\n<li>Paste it into the field and click the <strong>Add Site<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Important<\/strong>: Only use the homepage URL. Do not paste a URL from a deeper page (e.g., https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/medicine\/cardiology\/patient-care\/patient-resources\/)\u2014this will not work.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Adding a Site by Slug<\/h4>\n<p>If the site is part of the med.unc.edu domain, you can enter just the slug instead of the full URL. For example, if you wanted to display just the Grand Rounds events from the Pediatric web site.<\/p>\n<h3>Example Use Case<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Site A (Pediatrics)<\/strong>: Has many events, including Grand Round sessions. The grand round events have all been assigned a &#8220;grand rounds&#8221; category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Site B (Pediatric Education)<\/strong>: Syndicates only Grand Round events by filtering for the &#8220;grand rounds&#8221; Category.<\/p>\n<h3>How To Filter For Categories and Tags<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Once you&#8217;ve added the site slug and clicked the Add Site button, click on the <strong>View Categories<\/strong> or <strong>View Tags<\/strong> links to see a list of available options from the site. These options will open in a new browser tab.\n<ul>\n<li>What the data looks like depends on the browser and browser extensions you have.<\/li>\n<li>Firefox and Edge will automatically format the results into a human readable format.<\/li>\n<li>Chrome and Safari will display the results as an unformatted text list that can be difficult to read. However, a JSON browser extension can be added to make the information legible.\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chromewebstore.google.com\/detail\/json-formatter\/bcjindcccaagfpapjjmafapmmgkkhgoa\">Chrome extension<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/prettyjson-for-safari\/id1445328303?mt=12\">Safari extension<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Find the <strong>ID number<\/strong> for the category\/tag you wish to filter for and add it to the corresponding Categories or Tags field.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>I Don\u2019t Want To Install An Extension<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re using Chrome or Safari and don\u2019t wish to install a browser extension to make the list of categories\/tags more legible, here\u2019s how you decipher the information and find the ID:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The information for each category\/tag is contained within { } brackets.<\/li>\n<li>The name of each category\/tag will be preceded by <strong>&#8220;name&#8221;<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tip:<\/strong> if you know the name of the category\/tag you wish to filter for, for example &#8220;research,&#8221; you can hit <strong>Ctrl + F<\/strong> (on windows) or <strong>Cmd + F<\/strong> (on Mac), to bring up a search box.
