When you hover over them, you\u2019ll see the first option inherits the layout and the second option is the 1 Column layout.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"imgBorderMed\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15092\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/419\/2026\/01\/page-options-panel-2.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of part of the Page Options Panel that controls layout.\" width=\"351\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/419\/2026\/01\/page-options-panel-2.png 351w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/419\/2026\/01\/page-options-panel-2-300x189.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Inherit Layout<\/strong> &#8211; the page inherits the layout of the upper-most parent page or the theme default (&#8220;2 Column Right&#8221;) if there is no parent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 Column<\/strong> &#8211; only displays the page content (no left navigation).<\/p>\n<p><strong>2 Column Right<\/strong> &#8211; displays navigation on the left and content on the right.<\/p>\n<hr  style=\"margin:40px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h2>When to Use the 1-Column Layout (No Left Navigation)<\/h2>\n<p>Some pages do not need left navigation, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A single, standalone page<\/li>\n<li>Pages that will never have child pages<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On these pages, you&#8217;ll want to switch the layout to <strong>1 Column<\/strong> to remove the white space reserved for the left nav. If you later add child pages, you must switch the layout back to <strong>2-Column<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important<\/strong>:<br \/>\nNever use the 1-Column layout on pages that have (or will have) child pages. If you remove the left navigation, users lose the ability to navigate the section, which creates usability and accessibility problems.<\/p>\n<hr  style=\"margin:40px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h2>How to Change a Page to a 1 Column Layout<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Edit<\/strong> the page.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>Page Options<\/strong> panel, locate the <strong>Layout<\/strong> options.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>1 Column<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Save<\/strong> or <strong>Update<\/strong> the page.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The white space reserved for the left navigation will disappear, and the content will span the full width.<\/p>\n<hr  style=\"margin:40px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h2>How to Return to the Default Layout<\/h2>\n<p>If you later add child pages, or the page becomes part of a section, switch back:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Edit<\/strong> the page.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>Page Options<\/strong> panel, locate the <strong>Layout<\/strong> options.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Inherit Layout<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Save<\/strong> the change.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This restores the left navigation and ensures consistent site structure.<\/p>\n<hr  style=\"margin:40px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h2>Layout Inheritance<\/h2>\n<p>Pages inherit their layout from the upper-most parent page (the section landing page).<\/p>\n<p>Avoid changing layouts in the middle of a section as it creates inconsistent page structures and can confuse visitors.<\/p>\n<h3>Key Behavior<\/h3>\n<p>The top-level parent page controls the layout for its entire section.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Child and grandchild pages automatically inherit that layout.<\/li>\n<li>If you manually change the layout on a child page, its own children <strong>do NOT<\/strong> inherit that change. They continue to follow the layout of the upper-most parent page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Parent<\/strong> Page (Controls layout)\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Child<\/strong> Page (inherits from Parent)\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Grandchild<\/strong> Page (inherits from Parent \u2014 NOT Child)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Another <strong>Child<\/strong> Page (inherits from Parent)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The default layout for School of Medicine pages is a two-column layout with navigation on the left and page content on the right.\u00a0This layout is called &#8220;2 Column Right&#8221;
