This page highlights the essential accessibility practices for video on School of Medicine websites. For information on video hosting options and detailed steps on embedding video, see our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/userguide\/media\/video\/\">Video<\/a> documentation in the User Guide.<\/p>\n<hr  style=\"margin:30px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n\n\n<div class=\"\tbig-quote\t\">\n\t \n<p>\u201cAn easy way to make your content more visible and readable to search engines is to provide captions for your video.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<hr  style=\"margin:30px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<p><strong>All prerecorded videos on UNC websites must be accessible<\/strong> under federal and UNC accessibility standards.<\/p>\n<p>Accessibility includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Captions (required)<\/li>\n<li>Audio descriptions (required only when visual information is not spoken)<\/li>\n<li>Transcripts (recommended for videos; required for audio-only content)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Captions (Required)<\/h2>\n<p>Captions display spoken dialogue and important non-speech audio such as music, laughter, doors closing and background sound cues.<\/p>\n<h3>Caption Benefits<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Required for deaf or hard-of-hearing users<\/li>\n<li>Helpful in sound-sensitive environments or when users have their computers muted.<\/li>\n<li>Improves SEO<\/li>\n<li>Improve comprehension by native and foreign language speakers. A\u00a0study\u00a0showed 80% of people who use video captions don\u2019t even have a hearing disability.<\/li>\n<li>Compensate for poor audio quality or background noise within a video.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Caption Requirements<\/h3>\n<p>Captions must be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Accurate \u2014 machine captions must be corrected<\/li>\n<li>Synchronized with the audio<\/li>\n<li>Complete \u2014 no missing dialogue.\u00a0Filler words like \u201cUm\u201d or \u201cuh\u201d can be omitted.<\/li>\n<li>Descriptive \u2014 include essential sound cues (like background music, or cheering) in brackets<\/li>\n<li>Identify speakers in brackets or parenthesis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Machine-generated captions must be reviewed and corrected.<\/p>\n<h3>Captioning Support<\/h3>\n<p>UNC\u2019s Digital Accessibility Office (DAO) provides:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalaccessibility.unc.edu\/training\/\">Free training on captioning best practices<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Access to <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalaccessibility.unc.edu\/3play-media\/\">discounted captioning services<\/a> through 3Play Media.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr  style=\"margin:30px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h2>Transcripts (Recommended for Video, Required for Audio-Only)<\/h2>\n<p>A transcript is a written version of everything spoken in the video. They are required for all audio-only files, like podcasts or voice recordings. They can also accompany videos because they help:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Search engines index your content<\/li>\n<li>Users who prefer reading<\/li>\n<li>Individuals on slow connections<\/li>\n<li>Users needing to search content<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr  style=\"margin:30px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h2>Audio Descriptions (Required Only When Needed)<\/h2>\n<p>Add audio description when key visual content is not spoken aloud. If narration already describes what is shown, additional audio descriptions are <strong>not<\/strong> required.<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalaccessibility.unc.edu\/captions-transcripts\/#Audio-Descriptions\">example video with audio descriptions<\/a> can be found on the DAO website.<\/p>\n<hr  style=\"margin:40px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<div class = \"alert alert-info blue oscitas-bootstrap-container\">\n<h2>Lawsuit Against Harvard University<\/h2>\n<p>In 2015, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/blog\/harvard-mit-sued-captioning-violation-ada-rehabilitation-act\/\">the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) filed a class-action lawsuit against Harvard University (and MIT)<\/a> for allegedly violating the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act by <strong>failing to provide accurate and comprehensive captioning<\/strong> for online educational videos.<\/p>\n<p>After four years of litigation, the NAD and Harvard University settled. <strong>The settlement contained specific requirements for 99 percent accuracy rate on captions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr  style=\"margin:30px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h2>Add a Title Attribute to an Iframe<\/h2>\n<p>Videos are often embed on a web page using an iframe. For accessibility reasons, you should always include a <strong>title<\/strong> attribute for an &lt;iframe&gt;. This is used by screen readers to read what the content of the iframe is. For example, the iframe code from Panopto does not include the title attribute by default so you will need to add one. Simply add <code class=\"inline\">title=\"Add your descriptive title here\"<\/code> to the iFrame code.
