{"id":15234,"date":"2026-01-27T10:04:45","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T15:04:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/?page_id=15234"},"modified":"2026-03-02T11:53:00","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T16:53:00","slug":"primary-site-administrator","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/userguide\/web-standards-policies\/primary-site-administrator\/","title":{"rendered":"Primary Site Administrator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each School of Medicine (SOM) website is required to have a <strong>primary<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>site administrator<\/strong>, who acts as the business owner for the site\u2019s content.The <strong>Primary Site Administrator<\/strong> must be a SOM faculty or staff member.<\/p>\n<p>Responsibilities include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Serves as the primary point of contact with the Web Team.<\/li>\n<li>Owning website strategy, direction and content curation.<\/li>\n<li>Delegating web content responsibilities to other site editors.<\/li>\n<li>Assigning access to users who will assist in managing their site\u2019s content.\n<ul>\n<li>Refer to our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/userguide\/sharing-permissions\/\">Sharing and Permissions\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>documentation to learn which roles can be assigned.<\/li>\n<li>Access to a website should only be granted to users responsible for maintaining content on an ongoing basis. A single update, such as a change to a faculty profile, does not require access and should be completed by an existing site editor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Ensure all site editors are properly trained.\n<ul>\n<li>Anyone assigned the <strong>Administrator role<\/strong>\u00a0is required to attend our\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/training-events\/\">Introductory Web Training<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0class before receiving access.<\/li>\n<li>All other editors are strongly encouraged to attend the training but are not required.\u00a0This is at the discretion of the primary site administrator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Coordinating site reviews, audits, and launch requests.<\/li>\n<li>Periodically review content to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/userguide\/analytics-and-seo\/cleaning-up-website-content\/\">remove outdated, duplicate, or unnecessary pages<\/a>. Sites that are not properly maintained may be flagged for review or taken offline.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure accessibility, branding, and security requirements are followed<\/li>\n<li>Report site issues to the SOM web team so they can be addressed.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure third-party content follows SOM guidelines and does not introduce accessibility, security, or compliance risks.<\/li>\n<li>If a site is allowed to hire an external vendor, freelancer, or contractor, the Primary Site Administrator remains responsible for:\n<ul>\n<li>Ensuring vendors follow accessibility and branding requirements<\/li>\n<li>Reviewing and approving content before it goes live<\/li>\n<li>Preventing the use of unapproved tools, plugins, or custom code<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Third-party vendors can manage content but cannot serve as the primary site administrator.<\/li>\n<li>Adhere to SOM policies and best practices for managing site content.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>While content creation may be shared across multiple editors, ownership cannot be delegated.
