{"id":7698,"date":"2019-09-27T16:11:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-27T20:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/?page_id=7698"},"modified":"2026-05-12T09:53:40","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T13:53:40","slug":"widgets","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/userguide\/widgets\/","title":{"rendered":"Widgets &#038; Site Footer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Widgets are reusable content components that display in predefined areas of a website outside the main page content.<\/p>\n<p>In the School of Medicine web system, widgets are primarily used for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/userguide\/widgets\/navigation-widget-section\/\">The left-hand navigation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/userguide\/widgets\/site-footer\/\">The site footer<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr  style=\"margin:40px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h2>Accessing Widgets<\/h2>\n<p>Only users assigned the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/userguide\/sharing-permissions\/\"><strong>Administrator role<\/strong><\/a> can modify widgets.<\/p>\n<p>To access the widgets screen, go to <strong>Appearance \u2192 Widgets<\/strong> in the dashboard<\/p>\n<p>On the Widgets screen:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On the left-hand side, under <strong>Available Widgets<\/strong>, is a list of widgets that can be added to widget areas<\/li>\n<li>On the right-hand side are the widget areas that hold those widgets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most available widgets are rarely used. The widget most commonly used on SOM sites is the <strong>Text<\/strong> widget.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"imgBorderMed\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/419\/2026\/05\/widgets-screen.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-15729 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/419\/2026\/05\/widgets-screen-1024x542.png\" alt=\"Screenshot of the widgets screen in WordPress, links to full-size image.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/419\/2026\/05\/widgets-screen-1024x542.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/419\/2026\/05\/widgets-screen-300x159.png 300w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/419\/2026\/05\/widgets-screen-768x406.png 768w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/419\/2026\/05\/widgets-screen-1536x813.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/419\/2026\/05\/widgets-screen-600x318.png 600w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/419\/2026\/05\/widgets-screen-560x296.png 560w, https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/419\/2026\/05\/widgets-screen.png 1799w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<hr  style=\"margin:40px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h2>Adding, Removing, and Rearranging Widgets<\/h2>\n<p>Widgets can be added, removed, and rearranged within widget areas to control what content displays on the site.<\/p>\n<h3>Adding a Widget<\/h3>\n<p>To add a widget:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to <strong>Appearance \u2192 Widgets<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Locate the widget you want to add under <strong>Available Widgets<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>You can then add it to a widget area using either of the following methods:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Drag and Drop<\/strong> \u2013 Drag the widget into the desired widget area on the right side of the screen<\/li>\n<li><strong>Add Widget Button<\/strong> \u2013 Click the widget, select the desired widget area from the pop-up menu, then click <strong>Add Widget<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Configure the widget settings if needed<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Save<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Rearranging Widgets<\/h3>\n<p>The order of widgets in a widget area determines the order in which they display on the site.<\/p>\n<p>To rearrange widgets, simply click, drag, and drop a widget into a new position within the stack of widgets.<\/p>\n<h3>Removing a Widget<\/h3>\n<p>Widgets can either be permanently deleted or moved to the <strong>Inactive Widgets<\/strong> section.<\/p>\n<h4>Delete a Widget<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Expand the widget by clicking its title<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Delete<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Move a Widget to Inactive Widgets<\/h4>\n<p>If you want to reuse a widget later, you can move it to the <strong>Inactive Widgets<\/strong> section instead of deleting it.\u00a0This removes the widget from the site while preserving its settings and content.<\/p>\n<p>The Inactive Widgets are located below the list of available widgets.<\/p>\n<p>To move a widget, simply drag the widget into the Inactive Widgets section.
