All links should have clear, descriptive text that tells users what to expect.<\/li>\n<li>SEO benefit: Descriptive link text helps search engines understand your content.<\/li>\n<li>Style consistency: The SOM theme automatically styles links for accessibility and brand compliance; there\u2019s no need to customize colors or underlines.<\/li>\n<li>Do not style regular text to look like a link. For example, avoid underlining or coloring text blue. This can confuse visitors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr  style=\"margin:40px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h2><a id=\"standard-links\"><\/a>Creating Standard Links<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Email links<\/strong> and <strong>document links<\/strong> (Word Docs., PDF, etc.) each have their own unique method which are explained below.<\/p>\n<h3>Option 1: Copy and Paste a URL (Quickest Method)<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>In a separate browser window, go to the web page that you want to create a link to.<\/li>\n<li>In the browser&#8217;s address bar, copy the url of the page.<\/li>\n<li>Go to the web page you wish to add a link to.<\/li>\n<li>Type out some <a href=\"#link-text\">descriptive link text<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Highlight the text.<\/li>\n<li>Paste it directly onto the highlighted text (<strong>Ctrl + V<\/strong> on Windows or <strong>Cmd + V<\/strong> on Mac).<\/li>\n<li>WordPress will automatically create a link.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Option 2: Use the Link Icon and Paste a URL<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to the web page you wish to add a link to.<\/li>\n<li>Type out some <a href=\"#link-text\">descriptive link text<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Highlight the text.<\/li>\n<li>Click the Insert\/Edit Link icon <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14829\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/419\/2025\/11\/link-icon.png\" alt=\"Link icon.\" width=\"25\" height=\"26\" \/> in the toolbar.<\/li>\n<li>In the popup field, paste or type your full URL.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Apply<\/strong> (the arrow icon) or <strong>Enter<\/strong> on your keyboard to create the link.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Option 3: Use the Link Icon and Search for Internal Content<\/h3>\n<p>This method helps you link to pages, news posts, events, or profiles already on your site without needing to copy the URL.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to the web page where you wish to create a link.<\/li>\n<li>Type out some <a href=\"#link-text\">descriptive link text<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Highlight the text.<\/li>\n<li>In the editor, click the Insert\/Edit Link button <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14829\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/419\/2025\/11\/link-icon.png\" alt=\"Link icon.\" width=\"25\" height=\"26\" \/>.<\/li>\n<li>In the popup box that appears, type a few keywords from the page title or body content of the page you want to link to.\n<ol>\n<li>A dropdown list of matching internal content will appear.<\/li>\n<li>Select the correct item, then click\u00a0<strong>Apply<\/strong> or <strong>Enter<\/strong> on your keyboard to create the link.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr  style=\"margin:40px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h2><a id=\"email-links\"><\/a>Creating Email Links<\/h2>\n<p>In HTML, email links use the prefix \u201c<strong>mailto:<\/strong>\u201d to tell browsers to open a user\u2019s default email program instead of navigating to a webpage. When your <strong>link text is an email address<\/strong> (for example, webhelp@med.unc.edu), the SOM web system automatically adds \u201cmailto:\u201d for you. If the <strong>link text is not an email address<\/strong> (for example, Email the Web Team), you\u2019ll need to manually add \u201cmailto:\u201d followed by the address.<\/p>\n<h3>Option 1: When the Link Text Is the Email Address<\/h3>\n<p>If the link text is an email address, such as someone@med.unc.edu, the system automatically adds the \u201cmailto:\u201d prefix in the link bar.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to the web page where you wish to create a link.<\/li>\n<li>Type the full email address (for example, someone@med.unc.edu) in the page where you want the link.<\/li>\n<li>Highlight the text.<\/li>\n<li>Click the Insert\/Edit Link icon <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14829\" src=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/419\/2025\/11\/link-icon.png\" alt=\"Link icon.\" width=\"25\" height=\"26\" \/>.<\/li>\n<li>In the URL field, type <strong>mailto:<\/strong>\u00a0followed by the same email address. See the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/userguide\/media\/documents#create-doc-links\">Documents documentation<\/a> for detailed steps on uploading and linking to these files.<\/p>\n<hr  style=\"margin:40px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h2><a id=\"link-text\"><\/a>Meaningful Link Text<\/h2>\n<p>Accessible, descriptive link text improves both user experience and SEO. Link text should clearly describe the purpose or destination of the link. Users should know exactly what will happen when they click it.<\/p>\n<p>Screen readers often present a list of all links on a page without surrounding context, so link text must make sense on its own.<\/p>\n<h3>Don&#8217;t<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t use vague phrases like \u201cClick here,\u201d &#8220;Learn More,&#8221; or \u201cRead more.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t use full URLs as link text &#8211; screen readers will read every character.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Incorrect<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/residency\/\">https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/residency\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Correct<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/urology\/residency\/\">Urology Residency Program<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t use multiple links that all say the same thing but go to different places.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Example<\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s say you work Roper Hall, and you want to help visitors find your location. You might add a sentence like &#8220;Directions to our Roper Hall location.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If you make only \u201c<strong>Roper Hall<\/strong>\u201d the link text, that\u2019s not descriptive enough. \u201cRoper Hall\u201d could link to Google Maps, a parking map, or even an article about the construction of Roper Hall (like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/md\/curriculum\/introducing-roper-hall\/\">MD Curriculum\u2019s Roper Hall page<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A better choice is to make the entire phrase \u201c<strong>Directions to our Roper Hall location<\/strong>\u201d the link text. For example: <strong>https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/webguide\/userguide\/getting-started\/links#top-of-page.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr  style=\"margin:40px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h2><a id=\"opening-links\"><\/a>Opening Links in New Tabs or Windows<\/h2>\n<p>Opening links in new tabs or windows is not recommended. Both the SOM Web Team and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) discourage this practice because it removes control from the user and can be confusing for people using screen readers or those with cognitive disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors can always choose to open links in a new tab or window themselves (for example, by right-clicking a link and selecting \u201cOpen Link in New Tab\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>If you must open a link in a new tab, always warn users in advance by including text such as \u201c(opens in a new tab)\u201d in the link.<\/p>\n<h3>Why It\u2019s a Problem<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It creates unexpected behavior and breaks the browser\u2019s back-button history.<\/li>\n<li>It can disorient screen reader users and those with cognitive impairments.<\/li>\n<li>It removes user choice and control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr  style=\"margin:40px 0\"class=\" rule-thin osc-rule\" \/>\n<h2><a id=\"linked-images\"><\/a>Linked Images<\/h2>\n<p>When an image functions as a link, its alt text becomes the link text for screen readers.
