Venous thrombosis involves the formation of fibrin-rich \u201cred clots\u201d that result from exposure of procoagulant activity on intact endothelium plus plasma hypercoagulability, in reduced or static blood flow. Venous thrombi are thought to initiate behind valve pockets, in which reduced or static flow decreases wall shear stress that normally regulates endothelial cell phenotype. Venous thrombosis can also lead to dangerous complications, such as pulmonary embolism and post-thrombotic syndrome. Venous thrombosis occurs when <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/jth.12918\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">red blood cell-rich thrombi<\/a> form in veins; this is often due to abnormal interactions between three components: <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/anesthesia-analgesia\/Fulltext\/2012\/02000\/Procoagulant_Activity_in_Hemostasis_and.5.aspx\">blood hypercoagulability, abnormal blood flow, and endothelial dysfunction<\/a>. We have helped to elucidate specific pathobiological mechanisms contributing to venous thrombosis, including specific roles for <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21355090\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fibrinogen<\/a>, <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23723374\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prothrombin<\/a>, <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21828144\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">factor VIII<\/a>, and <a class=\"external-link\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=aleman+jci\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">factor XIII<\/a>.
